RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, implement, and monitor budgets and operations plans to support the mission of the Beef Center and department, in coordination with the ASTREC Manager and the Manager of Livestock Operations.
- Train and oversee employee(s) in animal handling, care, and husbandry practices.Ensure employees are properly trained in equipment operations, and facility cleaning and care.
- Provide quality animal care and husbandry for production, teaching, and research animals according to protocols and ensure regulatory compliance.Responsible for accurate inventory, production, and animal management records.
- Maintain and improve physical assets of the facility, including pastures.Ensure preventative and deferred maintenance schedules are in place for facilities and equipment (including planned replacement of equipment).
- Assist in management of the Feed Services operation.Communication with facility managers, ASTREC manager, and faculty to formulate feed rations for the different animal groups.Mix feed and process commodities in order to support the research and teaching activities at each of the centers.Ensure that research projects and facilities are invoiced in a timely manner for product used.
- Manage all aspects of the Red Angus, Beefmaster, and teaching herds.Work with faculty in securing animal donations, donor females, and reproductive schedules to help build the purebred herd programs.Responsible for development, marketing, and sales of production animals.
- Assist other facility managers, in coordination and response to the ASTREC Manager, with project implementation.
- Assist faculty program leaders in implementation of departmental programs and classes through development and supply of livestock, facility resources, and logistics support in coordination with other faculty, graduate students, and staff to include support of state livestock shows, youth camps, livestock judging, 4-H and FFA activities.
- Coordinate Beef Center use for cattle sales with private entities.Work with the Animal Science Event Coordinator for booking the facility for use by none cattle sales groups.Invoice cattle sales groups and enforce Texas A&M Systems policies and procedures are followed.
- Provide operating and output data and performance metrics to departmental administration.
- Perform other job duties as required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
-Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
-Five years of related experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to perform various molecular biology and genetic techniques.
- Ability to analyze date and write reports.
- Computer literate to include the ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analysis, present date and perform other computer related tasks as directed by the supervisor.
- Detail oriented. Familiarity with appropriate laboratory, farm, and /or technical equipment.
- Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand/sit at work bench for extended period of time.
- Capable of lifting feed sacks weighing up to 50 lbs. and hay bales weighing from 65-110lbs.
- Large animal handling experience.
