Position Details:

Position Emphasis

The position supports the NEA's strategic objective to focus the energy and resources of its 3 million members toward advancing public education by working within the Strategy Department in the Office of the Executive Director. The incumbent will play a key role in helping to incorporate the incoming NEA President's vision and priorities and align them with the Association's strategic direction. The role includes policy analysis, synthesis, and development of resources and engagement opportunities that support organizational understanding, learning, and strategy implementation.

The position will also support association-wide strategic planning, organizational learning, innovation initiatives including labor-management collaboration practices that strengthen organizational effectiveness, member well-being, and student outcomes.

Position Summary

This six-month assignment provides an opportunity to contribute to several high-priority initiatives across the Association. The incumbent will partner with others in the Strategy Department to support strategic planning, organizational learning, facilitation, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative practice to help strengthen alignment between NEA's vision, strategic priorities, and organizational implementation efforts.

The incumbent will work closely with Strategy Department colleagues, leadership, and internal stakeholders to synthesize complex information and develop clear, compelling materials, presentations, reports, analyses, and engagement experiences that build understanding and support informed decision-making.

Key responsibilities may include:

Vision Alignment & Innovation

  • Support the clarification and communication of the incoming NEA President's aspirational vision and strategic priorities.
  • Align presidential vision priorities with the Association's Strategic Plan and identify opportunities for integration across organizational initiatives.
  • Create and present materials, resources, briefing documents, and presentations for leadership, the NEA Board of Directors, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Advance initiatives designed to deepen leadership understanding of connectedness, belonging, and their role in strengthening organizational culture, member engagement, and achievement of NEA's mission to unite members and the nation.
  • Recommend learning opportunities for the NEA's Vision Dialogue Group (G27) that support the ongoing discussions around connectedness/belonging and other relevant topics to clarify NEA’s emerging theory of success.

Strategic Planning and Organizational Learning

  • Support implementation of the NEA Strategic Plan and alignment of strategic priorities with organizational planning and budgeting processes.
  • Partner with Strategy Department colleagues to plan and prepare for the 2027 SWOT Analysis process, including project design, stakeholder engagement strategies, desired outcomes, timelines, and workplans.
  • Conduct analyses and develop reports that reflect organizational learning emerging from implementation of the Strategic Plan.
  • Develop high-quality written products, presentations, learning resources, and facilitation materials that strengthen strategic thinking and organizational learning across the enterprise.

Innovation: Labor-Management Collaboration

  • Partner with Strategy Department colleagues and cross-functional teams to deepen organizational understanding of Labor-Management Collaboration (LMC) as a power-building strategy.
  • Develop, curate, and maintain repositories of educational and professional development materials for NEA and affiliate staff.
  • Identify opportunities to apply collaborative labor-management approaches to additional organizational priorities and initiatives.
  • Develop tools, resources, and recommendations that increase practitioners’ effective use of LMC practices and support positive outcomes for students, educators, and members.
  • Suggest and support ongoing upgrades of NEA’s LMC website
  • Help document and communicate organizational learning and success stories related to LMC practices.

Minimum Education Requirement : A Bachelor's degree in Social Science, Education, Public Policy, Business, Organizational Development, Labor Studies, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired.

Selection Criteria: Tier 1 (Essential): Ability to synthesize complex information and translate it into clear, actionable recommendations, presentations, and communication materials for diverse audiences, including senior leadership. Experience designing and facilitating strategic conversations, learning experiences, and stakeholder engagement processes. Knowledge of vision development, organizational change, strategic alignment, and organizational learning practices. Strong written, presentation, analytical, and facilitation skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and develop productive relationships with diverse stakeholders. Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously within tight timelines. Tier 2 (Significant): Experience supporting strategic planning processes, SWOT analyses, organizational assessments, or related planning efforts. Knowledge of labor-management collaboration practices and collaborative problem-solving approaches. Experience developing executive-level briefings, board materials, learning resources, or facilitation tools. Familiarity with adult learning principles and engagement methodologies. Tier 3 (Desirable): Knowledge of NEA's Strategic Plan, governance structures, and organizational priorities. Familiarity with issues related to member engagement, belonging, organizational culture, and leadership development. Experience working in labor organizations, membership associations, public education, or mission-driven organizations.
