Senior Maintenance Worker

The Public Works Department is currently recruiting a Senior Maintenance Worker to join the Operations Division. This a non-exempt position based in the Folsom Sign Shop and is represented by Local 39 IUOE. This position offers a work schedule of 4/10s or 9/80, and must be willing to participate in the on-call rotation after successfully completing probation.

IDEAL CANDIDATE 
This ideal candidate has experience with leading, assisting, and scheduling staff who perform specialized sign shop and field maintenance activities, including fabrication, installation, repair, and replacement of regulatory, warning, guide, street name, parking, and other traffic signs. 

Under the general supervision from the Streets Operations Supervisor, the Senior Maintenance Worker classification will lead, assist, and schedule staff in general maintenance activities, including routine cleaning and maintenance of grounds, parks, aquatic center, and/or other facilities; semi-skilled construction and maintenance of streets and roadways; specialized maintenance including installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signs, irrigation systems; collection of residential and commercial refuse and recyclables from the City driving heavy equipment requiring a Class A or B license on a continuous basis, and fertilization and/or pesticide spraying. Incumbents may oversee, monitor, and/or direct the work of lower level personnel.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Senior Maintenance Worker is the lead level in the Maintenance Worker series.  Incumbents provide direction to lower level staff including assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of staff.  Positions at this level are distinguished from those in the lower classification of Maintenance Specialist by performing lead work.  This class is distinguished from the class of Senior Maintenance Specialist in that the latter performs a variety of skilled work in a specific area of expertise requiring special licenses and/or certification for a preponderance of the time.
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties the listed.

• Performs a wide range of maintenance and repair duties including parks, parkways, landscaped corridors, medians, swimming pools, aquatic center(s), splash pads, water features, sports fields, public restrooms, streets, roadways, signs, drainage systems, bridges and open spaces, depending on assigned department.
• Assist crew members in the use of hand and power tools.
• Oversee general and specialized maintenance work performed by lower level personnel.
• Plan, oversee, and coordinate set up and break down of special events.
• Respond to customer complaints and determine customers' needs.
• Monitor, maintain, and purchases materials, tools, parts, and equipment as needed and assigned.
• Purchase tools and supplies from local sources.
• Maintain various records, reports, and correspondence.
• Train new employees in operation of various equipment.
• May apply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
• Install pipe and plumbing fixtures.
• Act as contact person when working with various crews.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

The Senior Maintenance Worker position is responsible for the listed job duties above, as well as those listed depending on their assigned department.

Public Works – Operations:

• Coordinate sign shop schedules, work assignments, and priorities. 
• Identify required sign fabrication, installation, repair, and replacement tasks and assign responsibilities to staff. 
• Ensure sign fabrication and installation complies with CA MUTCD, City standards, and applicable regulations. 
• Estimate and maintain adequate inventory of sign materials, sheeting, vinyl, posts, hardware, and supplies. 
• Operate and maintain specialized sign shop equipment, including printers, plotters, laminators, and cutting equipment. 
• Coordinate field installation and maintenance of signs and related traffic control devices. 
• Ensure proper safety and traffic control procedures are followed during sign shop and field activities. 
• Identify staff training needs related to sign fabrication, equipment operation, installation, and regulatory requirements. 
• Ensure all assigned work is accurately documented in the work order system. 
• Coordinate sign work with other Public Works Operations divisions, contractors, special events, and emergency operations. 
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe sign shop and ensure staff properly maintain and safely store equipment and materials.
• Establish standby list and coordinate schedule with staff
• Identify necessary tasks and assign responsibilities to appropriate staff.
• Identify additional training opportunities for staff development and compliance.
• Ensure compliance with California Department of Agriculture regulations for herbicide application and required training. 
• Estimate and quantify required materials for maintenance activities.
• Maintain current Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals used in accordance with regulatory requirements.
• Ensure all assigned work is accurately documented in the work order system.
• Ensure staff properly maintain and safely store equipment.

Parks & Recreation:

• Assist a park crew in trimming, planting, transplanting, irrigating, cultivating, and maintaining grass and turf areas using hand-operated and power-operated equipment.
• Lead and perform installation, maintenance, and repair of sprinkler systems.
• Performs inspection and maintenance of pool, pool deck, pool heaters, pool equipment including pumps, motors, and control rooms, troubleshooting and repairing equipment and facilities as needed.
• Performs pool chemistry tests to ensure chemical levels are compliant with regulatory requirements; evaluates chemical needs based on a variety of factors and makes adjustments to levels accordingly.

Utilities – Waste and Recycling:

• Schedule daily routes for solid waste collection drivers.
• Operate equipment to collect and dispose of city refuse and recyclables.

Education:
High School Diploma, G.E.D, or equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.

Experience:
One (1) year of full-time experience as a Maintenance Specialist with the City of Folsom in the designated functional area (grounds and park maintenance; irrigation systems; the aquatic facility; and/or streets operations maintenance).


Two (2) years of full-time experience as a Refuse Driver with the City of Folsom.


Three (3) years of full-time experience performing general maintenance work in the designated functional area (grounds and park maintenance; refuse collection; irrigation systems; aquatic centers/pools; streets operations maintenance, and/or heavy equipment operation).

License, Certificate, Registration Requirements:
At the option of the City, persons hired into this class may be required to either possess at entry or obtain within specified time limits, designated licenses, certificates or specialized education and training relevant to the area of assignment.  Additional requirements may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Qualified Applicators Certificate or License for pesticide application
• California Class "A" Drivers License
• California Commercial "B" Drivers License with tanker and airbrake endorsements or with passenger endorsement
• International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Safety Specialist in Traffic Safety

Other Requirements:
Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and on-call when scheduled. Upon reasonable notice, incumbent may be required to adjust daily schedule based upon seasonal operation demands.
