Job Description
The Welders Helper will assist journeyman structural fitters and welders with all aspects of assembling, cutting, and welding structural steel components.
Responsibilities
- Preparation of steel beams, plate, angle iron, and channel for welding or bolting utilizing cutting torch, drills and grinders.
- Assist with layout of structural welding clips, plates, grating and holes.
- Interpretation structural steel fabrication and assembly drawings
- Utilize OH cranes and forklifts for work tasks and know correct hand signals
- Knows structural material grades, sizes, and weights
- Sets up equipment and assists with welding as needed using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc, or gas welding equipment.
- Assist with handling and blasting of structural steel utilizing the Wheelabrator
- Signals equipment operator of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment.
- Assembles parts by bolting, welding or screwing.
- Assist with additional labor focused duties including, but not limited to, wash bay operations, snow removal, site clean up, and project specific equipment set ups & takedowns.
- Immediately report all Incidents/Accidents, no matter how small, to their Supervisor.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
- Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent or ten (10) years directly related experience will be considered.
- Minimum one (1) year directly related experience.
- Previous forklift operator experience. Must have current forklift operator certification.
- Good understanding of basic construction tools, processes, and procedures.
- Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy preferred.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
