The Role and Why It's Important

As a Seafood Department Manager Trainee, you'll work alongside department leadership to learn how to deliver the freshest, highest-quality seafood at a competitive price. From assisting with ordering and merchandising to learning to schedule and lead a team, this role builds the skills you'll need to run your own Seafood department.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service, treating customers as the most important people in the store

  • Learn to prepare product for display and special orders, including properly cutting seafood

  • Assist with writing ads, figuring department projections and actuals, merchandising product, and scheduling employees

  • Help order product, determine pricing, and control inventory

  • Review product status and appearance for freshness, pulling stale product and rotating or replenishing as needed

  • Offer meal solutions and preparation advice to customers

  • Help train new employees and step in for department leadership as needed

  • Ensure proper temperatures and storage procedures are maintained to guarantee freshness and control shrink

  • Practice proper sanitation procedures and maintain a clean, neat work area

  • Maintain strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress

  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as required

You'll receive direction and support from: District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home, the Meat Department Manager, and Assistant Meat Department Manager

Your Skills

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

  • Solve practical problems involving a variety of variables with limited standardization

  • Use basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Compose original correspondence, follow technical manuals, and interact effectively with people

  • Learn to train and support fellow department employees

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, along with food safety training; some related work experience preferred

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home; Meat Department Manager; Assistant Meat Department Manager

Direct Reports: Clerks, in the absence of department leadership

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, along with food safety training

  • Up to one year of similar or related work experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 100 pounds or more, with or without mechanical assistance

  • Continuously stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate pallet jacks, forklifts, or similar material-handling equipment (required operator certification must be completed prior to independent use)

  • Work in cooler or freezer environments for extended periods

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades to cut, trim, or grind product

  • Where applicable to the role, and in accordance with applicable age and legal requirements: operate a cardboard baler or compactor

  • Where applicable to the role: perform repetitive motions associated with dough mixing, scaling, and proofing

  • Ability to unload, lift, stock, and rotate incoming truck freight and merchandise

Working Environment

This position is exposed daily to dirt, noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, cleaning chemicals/solvents, and electrical shock. This is a fast-paced work environment.
