Description
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
This classification is responsible for assisting with work involved with the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of road and street signs, with layout of proposed road projects, coordinating and performing maintenance on flood control structures and airport, right of way acquisition and investigation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Assists with the fabrication, maintenance and installation of road and street signs, and other traffic control devices.
- Assists with maintenance and repair of electronic traffic signals.
- Assists with the sign maintenance and management program.
- Assists road department work crews with the setting up of work zone traffic controls in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Assists with coordinating and performing various maintenance duties as it relates to the public works department.
- Assists in utility locating and relocating.
- Assists in gathering project specific information.
- Performs general office duties, including answering phone, working with computer, and filling.
- Must be available to assist on-call personnel.
- Flags traffic.
- Assists with snow removal operations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of the geography of the county, including roads and landmarks.
- Knowledge of department safety guidelines.
- Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Knowledge of mathematics.
- Skill in the operation of heavy equipment.
- Skill in the use of GPS equipment and software.
- Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs.
- Skill in communicating effectively with the general public.
- Skill in research and in preparing reports.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED. Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office
- Ability to understand construction plans and GDOT specifications.
- One year of experience in public works, road/bridge maintenance, and or related field.
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License. Applicant must be able to obtain CDL license within 1 year.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or ladders/heights.
