Description

There is currently one full-time vacancy for a Police Crime Prevention Specialist. This position supports the Police Department by coordinating crime prevention and community outreach programs, including Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, public safety education, disaster preparedness, and related services. The position conducts presentations for residents, schools, businesses, and community organizations; develops crime prevention materials; supports media and public information activities; and responds professionally to inquiries from the public and media.

The Specialist may coordinate volunteers and community partners, conduct residential and business security inspections, provide recommendations to improve safety, and represent the Police Department at community events. The position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, public speaking ability, knowledge of media relations and social media, and the ability to work effectively with diverse members of the community. This is a non-sworn position that receives general supervision from Police Department staff and may provide lead direction to part-time, temporary, or volunteer personnel.

Selection Components:
  • Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of September 2, 2026.Candidates are required to submit a resume in order for the application package to be considered complete.  Those candidates deemed most qualified as reflected in their online application will be invited to an interview. 
  •  Interview: Tentatively scheduled on September 29, 2026. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future full-time vacancies as they occur.
Schedule:
This position may work a 5/40 schedule.

Retirement: 
The City offers an excellent benefit package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 8% (or half the normal cost, whichever is higher) of pay towards the retirement benefit.

A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Three years' administrative support experience, including a minimum of two years' heavy public contact experience. Work experience in a law enforcement environment desirable.

Education: Equivalent to completion of an Associate's degree (or completion of 60 semester units) in criminal justice, public relations, social sciences, or a related field.

License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.
