Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing drugs, maintaining the drug inventory and maintenance of records. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in accordance with Massachusetts regulation. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.
A. Principal Duties/Responsibilities
Procures and distributes drug orders according to physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment, and in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols within specified time frames.
Identifies and accurately fills replacement medications on emergency crash carts, OR carts, and floor stock.
Prepares sterile products, including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition, accurately.
Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately.
Demonstrates proficiency in all technical areas of automated dispensing, including, but not limited to, reporting, outdating, restocking, defrosting (SMART-REMOTE), PAR levels, and assigning PARs, users, and stock.
B. Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures, and protocols and within specified time frames.
Assists with ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.
Rotates stock to ensure use before the expiration date.
Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas.
Prepackages medications in unit-of-use containers.
C. Contributes to the effective operation of the department.
Maintains compliance with USP <797> and USP <800> regulations and requirements, including sterile compounding and sterile compounding area standard operating procedures.
Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas during delivery rounds.
Enters medication orders into the pharmacy computer system accurately.
Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.
Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required.
Answers the telephone, identifies self and department, and directs calls to the appropriate personnel.
Answers requests at the service window and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested.
Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately.
Files documentation in appropriate locations.
Demonstrates good verbal and written communication.
Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized.
Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.
Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner.
Conducts quality monitors, collects data, and completes documentation as assigned.
Attends staff meetings.
Participates in orientation, education, and training programs.
Reviews literature and other materials as assigned.
Completes all competency and skills assessment requirements (see attached competency assessment/skills list).
D. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Pharmacy Technician [State License] required
Pharmacy Technician Certification [CPhT] - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required
Experience
1-2 years of Pharmacy technician experience required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be able to read, write legibly, speak clearly and understand the English language.
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action in a timely fashion.
Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with staff, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
Must possess the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
Must possess the ability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, psychiatric, obstetric, oncology, chemically dependent, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients.
National pharmacy technician certification required. (or in process).
