Founded in 1981, Operation Food Search (OFS) is a hunger relief organization that provides food, nutrition education, and innovative programs to reduce food insecurity and increase equitable access to food. OFS serves approximately 200,000 people each month through a network of more than 600 partners across 24 counties in Missouri and Illinois.

OFS combines immediate food assistance and supportive services with long-term solutions and systemic change to help address the root causes of hunger.

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Volunteer and Food Drive Manager is responsible for the overall administration and management of volunteer programs and community food and fund drives. This position provides leadership and direction to volunteer program operations, supervises the Volunteer Coordinator, establishes program priorities and standards, and ensures that volunteer and food-drive activities effectively support OFS organizational goals.


Salary: $54,232.50 -$67677.50

  

Essential Functions:

Food & Fund Drive Management

  • Oversee the logistics involving food and fund drives with a focus on growth in food donations.
  • Manage at least one community food drive per quarter with a focus of increasing food donations over previous years. (e.g. Tackle Hunger, Shop Out Hunger, etc.).
  • Support fund drives by helping donors maximize their efforts on behalf of OFS.
  • Coordinate pickup and delivery logistics with OFS Operations team and donors, recording all food donations in the appropriate platforms.

Volunteer Program Management

  • Serve as the direct supervisor of the Volunteer Coordinator, providing clear direction, delegating responsibilities, setting expectations, monitoring performance, and holding staff accountable for results.
  • Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the volunteer program, establishing priorities, goals, policies, procedures, and standards that support OFS organizational objectives.
  • Lead all aspects of volunteer recruitment, onboarding, orientation, engagement, tracking, and evaluation, ensuring a consistent and high-quality volunteer experience.
  • Manage volunteer scheduling, placement, and program capacity, maintaining an effective internal calendar and ensuring volunteer resources are aligned with the needs of warehouse and programs.
  • Partner with OFS staff to assess volunteer needs and develop meaningful volunteer opportunities, including specialized events, age-appropriate activities, and opportunities that expand volunteer engagement.
  • Oversee the operations of the OFS Volunteer Center, ensuring a safe, welcoming, organized, and productive environment for volunteers and staff.
  • In collaboration with senior leaders, create annual financial program budget and administer program within the annual financial budget.
  • Oversee OFS’s Certified United Way Volunteer Program certification, leading the renewal process and ensuring ongoing compliance with certification standards and requirements.

Volunteer Recognition & Retention

  • Plan and manage activities throughout Volunteer Appreciation Week to celebrate contributions and encourage long-term engagement.
  • Implement recognition strategies to highlight volunteer impact throughout the year.
  • Foster a culture of appreciation through consistent acknowledgment of volunteers’ efforts.

Community Engagement

  • Represent Operation Food Search as a speaker, presenter, or representative at networking events, volunteer fairs, United Way rallies, corporate engagements and community organizations.
  • Identify and participate in relevant community events to promote volunteer and internship opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to promote volunteer opportunities via social media and community outreach.

Reporting

  • Gather feedback from volunteers to continuously improve engagement strategies.
  • Conduct surveys with Volunteer Groups and Food Drive participants; use insights to refine programs.
  • Ensure timely and accurate data entry and reporting across applicable systems, including Donor Perfect and other operational      databases.
  • Generate reports from operational databases for internal and external stakeholders, providing insights and recommendations to support program planning and decision making.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of professional experience with demonstrated responsibility for managing people, programs, or both, preferably in a nonprofit or community-oriented setting.
  • Prior supervisory or managerial experience is required, including demonstrated experience providing direction, delegating work, coaching and developing employees, addressing performance issues, and holding staff accountable for results.
  • Experience supervising and leading volunteers in a fast-paced setting
  • Fundraising experience is a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Passion for the OFS mission
  • Demonstrated leadership and people-management skills, including the ability to motivate, coach, delegate, develop, and hold others accountable.
  • Ability to provide clear direction while building a collaborative and positive team environment.
  • Experience building strong relationships both internally and externally
  • Ability to connect with diverse types of organizations: schools, businesses, government, faith organizations, etc.
  • Strong computer skills with MS Office: Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Proficiency with Donor Perfect, Galaxy, or similar nonprofit database systems.
  • Strong judge of character
  • Public speaking/facilitation skills

  • Detail-oriented, organized, and the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a larger staff team
  • Knowledge of volunteerism and volunteer management best practices

Special Requirements:

  • Occasional travel required for meetings, events, and conferences
  • Flexibility in working hours for occasional special events after-hours or weekend      activities
  • Willingness to volunteer for other OFS duties that don’t fall under regular job duties

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, both indoors and outdoors
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Position will use a pallet jack and other tools in a busy warehouse setting
