Description

The Maintenance Technician – Parks position operates equipment in a skilled and safe manner to maintain the City’s parks, buildings, grounds, marina, trails and open spaces. This position also assists with the maintenance of city streets, utilities, facilities and equipment.

Salary Range: $32.84/hour - $40.83/hour [Grade BU, Step 1-12]
Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $32.84/hour - $34.15/hour [Grade BU, Steps 1-3]

Schedule and Other Conditions: Standard forty (40) hour work week. Subject to periodic 24-hour emergency call-out.

Union Representation: This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The duties listed below are intended to illustrate the types of work that may be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation. The omission of a specific duty does not exclude it from the position if it is similar, related, or a logical assignment.

  • Perform labor in the maintenance of city parks, buildings, grounds, marina, trails and open spaces.
  • Operate equipment in the performance of snow and ice control.
  • Maintain City facilities by performing a variety of carpentry, plumbing, roofing, masonry, and related maintenance and repair projects.
  • Operate and repair irrigation systems.
  • Trim trees and remove associated debris.
  • Assist in the maintenance of City vehicles and equipment.  
  • Install and maintain City playground equipment.
  • Required to be on periodic 24-hour emergency call-out.
  • Perform other position-related duties as required or assigned.
  • Provide Cross-Divisional Support; Employees may be temporarily assigned by supervisors or management to work in other Public Works divisions or perform duties outside their regular assignment to meet operational, staffing, seasonal, emergencies, or other business needs.

  • Operates heavy and light equipment safely and properly; follows established safety procedures, policies, and applicable regulations; and performs work in a manner that promotes a safe environment. 
  • Completes assigned maintenance work safely, efficiently, accurately, and in a timely manner, contributing to a well-maintained, clean, and safe city park and facility system. 
  • Applies appropriate knowledge of park, facility, and grounds maintenance practices to effectively perform assigned duties and address maintenance needs. 
  • Uses sound judgment when assessing problems and situations, anticipating maintenance needs, determining appropriate solutions, and evaluating alternatives. Makes timely and appropriate decisions within established policies and procedures. 
  • Maintains effective, respectful and professional working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, the public, contractors, partner agencies, and other stakeholders. Communicates respectfully and contributes to a cooperative work environment. 
  • Keeps current with and consistently follows City policies, procedures, standards, and applicable requirements. 


Minimum:
  1. High school diploma or GED. 
  2. Two (2) years of experience working in park, turf or facilities maintenance and/or construction.
  3. Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Driver’s License and driving record that meets City and/or department standards.
  4. Ability to obtain a Minnesota Class B Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire.
  5. Maintain personal transportation sufficient to respond to the White Bear Lake Public Works garage within thirty (30) minutes during an emergency.

Helpful but not required:
  • Advanced degree or coursework in public works, turf maintenance or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience working in park or golf course maintenance.
  • Valid Minnesota Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and one or more additional languages.

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully and safely perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation. 

The Maintenance Technician regularly performs work that requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, climbing, and working in various physical positions as required to perform the essential functions of the position The employee frequently uses hands and fingers to handle, operate, and manipulate tools, equipment, controls, materials, and other objects. The position requires the ability to communicate effectively through speaking and hearing and may require the ability to detect odors associated with equipment, materials, or maintenance conditions.

The position may require lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tools, equipment, materials, and other items necessary to perform assigned duties. The employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

Specific vision abilities required to perform the essential functions of this position may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Environmental
This position may work indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to varying temperatures, weather conditions, dust, dirt, noise, odors, cleaning products, chemicals, machinery, electrical equipment, and other conditions commonly associated with maintenance and repair work. The position may require working in confined or elevated areas, using ladders or lifts, and working around operating equipment.

The employee is expected to follow established safety procedures, use required personal protective equipment, and comply with applicable federal, state, and local safety requirements.
