Job Summary

The Senior Software Development Engineer is responsible for the design, development and long-term technical health of business-critical applications and services. This role delivers complex technical solutions, provides technical leadership within the team, and contributes to architectural decisions and engineering best practices.

The Senior Software Development Engineer leads technical design and implementation within their area, mentors other engineers, and helps ensure the systems they work on remain scalable, secure, reliable and maintainable.

Key Responsibilities

Software Development & Architecture

• Design, develop, test and deploy complex software solutions.
• Lead technical design discussions and guide implementation approaches.
• Lead the delivery of complex features and solutions across multiple contributors.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and identify technical risks.
• Drive modernisation and technical debt reduction within assigned systems.
• Ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure and aligned with business requirements.

Product & System Ownership

• Own the design, delivery and ongoing technical health of assigned systems and services.
• Drive improvements in application scalability, performance and reliability.
• Lead investigation and root-cause analysis of complex production issues.
• Partner with DevOps and Platform teams to improve reliability, monitoring and observability.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of operational practices.

Technical Leadership & Engineering Excellence

• Lead technical discussions and provide guidance during design and implementation.
• Conduct code and design reviews and provide constructive technical guidance.
• Mentor Software Engineers and support their technical development.
• Champion high standards for code quality, testing, security and maintainability.
• Contribute to improvements in engineering practices and development processes.
• Facilitate knowledge sharing and cross-functional technical problem solving.

AI-Enabled Engineering

• Use AI-assisted development tools across coding, testing, debugging, documentation and code review to improve engineering productivity and quality.
• Demonstrate practical experience with AI coding assistants and agentic development workflows, using them effectively to understand existing code, troubleshoot problems and accelerate solution development.
• Apply strong engineering judgement when reviewing AI-generated output, ensuring solutions meet expected standards for quality, security, performance and maintainability.
• Actively adopt and promote effective AI-enabled development practices within the team.

Collaboration

• Collaborate closely with Product Management, Architecture, Support, DevOps and other Engineering teams.
• Provide technical input during planning, estimation and execution.
• Communicate technical decisions, risks and trade-offs clearly to relevant stakeholders.

Education / Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 7+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong TypeScript fluency with significant experience building production web applications and services.
• Strong experience with modern frontend and backend application development, including TypeScript/JavaScript, React and HTML/CSS.
• Strong experience designing and supporting scalable production systems.
• Experience with relational databases such as MySQL or equivalent.
• Experience with Docker, including container usage and basic troubleshooting.
• Good understanding of networking concepts relevant to modern web and distributed applications.
• Strong system design, troubleshooting and analytical skills.
• Experience leading technical projects and mentoring engineers.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cloud platforms, serverless applications and distributed systems, ideally Azure/Azure Functions or comparable technologies such as AWS Lambda.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures, messaging and asynchronous processing, including Service Bus or equivalent technologies.
• Familiarity with NoSQL and caching technologies, such as MongoDB and Redis.
• Experience with CI/CD, application security, observability and modern software delivery practices.
• Experience with Kubernetes and modern UI/design systems such as Material UI/MUI or equivalent.
• Exposure to PHP/AngularJS is beneficial for working with existing platform components; Java or C# experience is a plus.
