Radiological Protection Specialist

Overview

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Radiological Protection Specialist to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS). Apply online a current resume under the careers section of Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC)The Radiological Protection Specialist is responsible for supporting the growth and development of personnel through initial and proficiency training along with onboarding of radiological protection personnel.  Mentors personnel during instruction periods while also coaching personnel during observations of mockup and field activities.  Coaches and instructs radiological protection personnel to ensure safe and compliant radiological practices and adherence to all Federal, State, Company, and Site requirements.

Responsibilities

A Radiological Protection Specialist: 

• Upgrades the quality of the radiological protection program to include monitoring the conduct of training and qualification programs for Radiological Protection Inspectors and First Line Managers by approving OJT qualifications, reviewing and approving facility specific training materials, and participating in training review committee as needed. Identifies improvement opportunities, implements process improvements, and evaluates radiological events. Communicates lessons learned.
• Works to grow personnel best practices in maintaining contamination at the source and minimizing exposure while executing tasks in higher exposure areas. Does this by example and by coaching and explaining the best process for the better response.
• Assists Radiological Protection management in observing and assessing performance of radiological protection personnel in the field, training, or drill/exercise situations to ascertain areas of weakness or that may need further developmental reviews.
• Supports the onboarding and initial training of new radiological protection inspectors and act as a mentor, coach, and instructor, focused on the success of all personnel. This includes observations and support in the classroom, radiological worker preparation, core On the Job Training (OJT) performance, mockup orientation for personnel, and coordinating proficiency field training.
• Provides additional training on areas of emphasis to supplement SRNS training and tests SRMC personnel on knowledge retention. Observes and advises personnel on safe practices in the field.
• Assists in the management of personnel, while encouraging them to be engaged and active in the class. Offers counseling as well as instruction to help personnel better understand the material which forms the basis of their newly selected career. Provides one-on-one mentorship in mock-up.
• Ensures personnel follow the requirements of the Site's Radiological Controls (5Q) Manuals; and other procedural instructions in the performance of their assigned duties.
• Teaches and refreshes with personnel the aspects of use for portable survey instruments to perform surveys for probe and smear contamination surveys along with exposure and airborne characterization.
• Conducts walkthroughs and surveillance of areas to monitor and enforce standards. Reviews radiation and contamination control survey documentation in support of habitability and job site safety programs to include reviewing air sample results, radiological data, and radiological survey log sheets.  Communicates deficiencies noted in facility operations to management sponsors.
• Shares work experiences and practical examples to enhance awareness and connection between training and field activities and to assist with providing imagery of job training scenarios.
• Provides administrative support as needed for interviews, classroom scheduling and coordination, verifying time input and coding.
• Leads by example and demonstrates correct methods to employ when performing various and sometimes unfamiliar tasks. Coaches the process and defines best practices. 
• Works on behalf of the Field Safety & Health organization while simultaneously working with SRNS Radiological Protection Training to ensure personnel are getting the instruction needed to be successful in SRMC facilities.
• Provides instrumentation support in education, remediation, and in formulating training aids to help ensure the success of personnel.
• Creates and validates packages on various topics and identifies when additional emphasis is needed for field personnel. Provides direction of HR orientation and in the alignment of regulatory training along with medical evaluations.
• Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Radiological Protection, Health Physics, Safety, Health, Industrial Hygine, Environmental Engineering or related science and related experience; or

• High School Diploma/GED or Associates degree and related experience

Additional information:

• Must have a flexible schedule to provide off-shift observations, coaching, and support
• Familiarity with SRS Radiological Protection practices and policies 

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience supervising or leading Radiological Protection Inspectors and/or First Line Managers
• Experience as a Radiological Protection Inspector
• Prior experience with compiling, preparing and presenting Radiological Protection (S&H) material to multiple management levels.
• Familiarity with STAR database, Excel and PowerPoint
• Drill/Exercise Controller Qualified
• On the Job Training (OJT) Trainer/Evaluator

USD $94,524.00/Yr.

Maximum Pay

USD $170,076.00/Yr.
