Position Summary
The Ed Medical Assistant is responsible for performing quality patient care in an expanded in-hospital scope of practice in accordance with MRS Title 32, §3270-A. ASSISTANTS; DELEGATING AUTHORITY, and as such are defined as “medical assistants” in the intent of this statue. Performs patient transport for the inpatient areas and cleans / retrieves / re-allocates patient equipment to its proper location.
Position Specific Competencies:
- Independently manages ESI Level 4&5 patients after triage
- Collaboratively manages ESI Level 1,2,3 patients with co-assigned RN.
- Assignments will be delegated by Charge RN and maybe reassigned or co-assigned based on acuity.
- Perform standard assessments using basic and complex equipment
- Based on assessments, identify patient care priorities
- Reassess patient status/needs at appropriate intervals
- Reports patient status changes/needs to appropriate RN or ED physician/treating clinician
- Works collaboratively with all members of ED team to provide safe evidence-based care to all ED patients.
- Prepares equipment and assists nursing staff during treatments and examination of patients.
- Uses equipment/safety protocols/and policies in providing care and transport to patients.
- Reports changes in patient condition to a nurse and or assigned provider.
- Maintains annual competencies. Supports practice that is consistent with the tenets of shared governance and with the philosophy of the unit and the organization.
- Assists with problem solving and conflict resolution to maximize team performance.
- Participates in aspects of care and unit activities with nursing personnel in order to meet patient needs and to maximize team performance.
- Assists other health care members in rendering patient care.

- Wound Care - Simple Laceration repair with sutures, Staples, Dermabond, steri strips, Wound Irrigation, Suture Removal, Staple Removal, Simple Abscess needle aspiration
- Specimen Collection Swabs
- Ear Irrigation
- NIHSS
- Initiate Full Spinal Precautions
- Immobilize Patients with Long Backboard
- Receive Report (radio, phone, face-to-face)
- Morgan Lens
- Blood Glucose Analysis
- Discharge Instructions
- Initial Triage of Patients.
ED Medical Assistant may provide same level of care as trained in the CAIP program and that is within the scope of practice and policy at SJB.
Provider Must be at Bedside to Perform the Following:
- Advanced airway management
- Supraglottic Airway
- Direct and Video Laryngoscopy
- Endotracheal Intubation (Oral or Nasal)
- Transcutaneous Pacing
- Synchronized Cardioversion
Ed Medical Assistant must demonstrate adequate competency prior to independent practice of any of the above skills.
Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma/GED
Certification(s):
BLS, ACLS and PALS within 30 days of employment
Registration(s):
Proof of current or prior paramedic licensure
Completion of Maine EMS Paramedic Interfacility Transfer (PIFT) training preferred
Advanced Paramedic Certifications preferred

Comp Range:
