SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Project Engineer to join our Pittsburgh, PA team.

 

In this role, you will support engineering infrastructure projects.

 

This is a hub opportunity based out of the Pittsburgh, PA office. Priority will be given to local applicants. 

 

You will collaborate with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams to support project execution and ensure successful delivery of environmental outcomes.

 

This role offers the opportunity to expand project responsibility, strengthen technical expertise, and take ownership of key project components.

What you will accomplish

  • Leads full project management activities by overseeing technical tasks, schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure successful completion of assigned projects. Manages all aspects of project execution, including client communication, team coordination, and quality assurance. Responsible for preparation of complete design deliverable packages at permitting and construction stages.
  • Designs stormwater management systems and erosion control measures for assigned projects. Applies advanced technical expertise to refine designs and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Conducts detailed analyses for utility crossings along stream channels, rights-of-way, easements, and wetland crossings, ensuring designs minimize environmental impacts while meeting project requirements. Provides technical guidance to optimize crossing solutions.Leads the preparation and coordination of comprehensive construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents to guide project implementation. Ensures all documentation adheres to industry and regulatory standards. Leads quality assurance reviews for analyses and deliverables.
  • Oversees permitting processes by preparing and submitting regulatory documentation for stormwater management plans, stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPPs), and erosion control measures. Leads coordination with agencies to address compliance requirements.
  • Performs advanced hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to support stormwater management design and assess drainage scenarios. Uses modeling tools to simulate project conditions and optimize solutions.
  • Leads coordination with multidisciplinary teams to integrate environmental science and engineering principles into project designs.
  • Oversees and guides collaboration among scientists, planners, and engineers to achieve project objectives.
  • Oversees construction-phase services by monitoring progress, ensuring adherence to specifications, and addressing on-site challenges.
  • Communicates with contractors to resolve issues and maintain project quality. Provides technical guidance and decision-making support and serves as lead for construction stakeholders regarding conflict resolutions and corrective actions.
  • Leads engagement with clients and stakeholders to communicate project goals, progress, and outcomes. Builds and maintains relationships to support business development and client satisfaction.
  • Mentors junior staff by providing technical guidance, training, reviewing work products, and fostering professional growth. Encourages knowledge sharing and collaboration within the team.
  • Follows applicable federal, Tribal, state, local, industry, contractual, and company regulations, standards, and specifications.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering or related engineering field.
  • At least four (4) years of experience in civil engineering for the Associate Project Civil Engineer (PII) and at least (5) years of experience for a Project Civil Engineer (PIII).
  • Professional Engineer License in Pennsylvania, or ability to obtain via reciprocity.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Seven (7) or more years of experience in civil/stormwater design.
  • Additional PE License in surrounding states.
  • Experience supporting proposal development, business development, and client management.
