Machinist

Turner Industries Group is looking for a Machinist at our Pipe Fabrication Facility in Port Allen, LA. This position will be responsible for setting up and operating a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Assigned duties according to specific procedures/work is checked frequently.

Functional Requirements:

Calculates dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers, Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders, measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers, set up, adjust, and operate all the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations. align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines., monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process, study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances., select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work, lay out, measure and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts, observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose malfunctions and determine the need for adjustments or repairs, check workpieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled, maintain industrial machines and apply knowledge of mechanics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures, position and fasten workpieces, operate equipment to verify operational  efficiency, install repaired parts into equipment or install new equipment, clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter, advise clients about the materials being used for finished products, fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools, perform alignments per supervisor's direction.

 

Qualifications:

• Preferably 1 to 4 years of experience in specified skill
• Machinist certification may be required 
• HS Diploma or GED
• Knowledge of all machine tools (hand and powered) and associated hazards
• Special focus on safety hazards with lathes and cutting tools
• Written pre-employment qualification test 
• Must possess excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational skills
• Must be self-directed and detail oriented
• Proficient in MS Excel
• Post-offer drug/alcohol screen, Turner Industries Group Indoctrination, and Job site orientation
• Applicant/employee must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of such individual or others at the workplace
• "Personal Protective Equipment" (hearing protection, safety glasses, long sleeve shirt, gloves, steel toe boots, etc.) required when in shop/yard areas.

 

Physical and Mental Involvement:

May be required to do the following: climb ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc. above and below ground level, maintain balance on ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc. reaching in all directions, handling and manipulating objects and materials, coordinating the movements of eyes, hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment, lifting 30 to 50 pounds from ground level, waist level and/or overhead, carrying objects, tools, equipment etc. standing/sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, crouching/squatting, seeing with or without correction, hearing with or without correction, wearing respirator and other PPE, typing/data entry, stepstool use, work in excessive heat, work in excessing cold, work in loud environment

Location: shop location inside and outside

Mobility Barriers to Access Job Site: uneven ground level, obstructed pathways, work performed at low and/or high elevations, work performed in confined areas

Climate/Environment Conditions at Job Site: predominately outdoor climate, exposure to various noise levels caused by tools, machinery equipment etc., may be exposed to extreme hot or cold weather, excessive humidity, rain, etc. potential exposure to chemical substances.
