Description
This position is available for Los Angeles, CA 90066. The position is 100% on site, work from home is not applicable for this requirement.
The Director, Video Operations is a senior people leader responsible for the end-to-end operational performance of DIRECTV's sports delivery and operations function. This role leads a team of managers and individual contributors, owns the annual strategic direction of the department, and serves as the primary contributor for operational policies, processes, and resource allocation within the function.
Working closely with cross-functional partners across Engineering, Content, Technology, Product, and external providers, the Director sets the operational standard for video quality, reliability, and efficiency. This leader translates business objectives into executable team plans, drives a culture of continuous improvement and accountability, and ensures the organization is positioned to meet both current and near-term operational demands. Decisions made in this role have direct impact on the short-term goals of the organization, and the Director is expected to exercise considerable judgment in navigating complex, multi-variable challenges with limited direction from above.
Here’s what you’ll do:
Strategic Planning & Execution
- Translate senior leadership objectives into annual departmental goals, project plans, and resource strategies; determine talent needs and operational priorities for the next 12-16 months.
- Partner with senior leadership to define operational success metrics, KPIs, and performance benchmarks for the video operations function.
- Identify and act on opportunities to improve and automate workflows, reduce operational risk, and drive measurable gains in efficiency and service quality.
People Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of supervisors and individual contributors, fostering a high-performance culture grounded in accountability and continuous growth.
- Manage staffing, scheduling, and workforce planning to ensure operational coverage and team effectiveness.
- Conduct regular performance check-ins, provide ongoing feedback, and complete formal performance evaluations in Workday (mid-year and end-of-year).
- Partner with HR to address employee relations matters, performance improvement situations, and talent development needs.
Operational Excellence
- Own the day-to-day health of video operations, including monitoring system performance, resolving escalated technical and operational issues, and ensuring service continuity.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective action planning for operational incidents, outages, or quality failures.
- Drive and sustain a continuous improvement program across all areas of video operations, leveraging data and industry best practices to inform decisions.
- Develop, document, and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) and operational policies.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Serve as the primary operations liaison to Engineering, Technology, Product, Content, and other business units, aligning operational capabilities to broader company priorities.
- Represent Sports Operations in leadership forums, project planning sessions, and stakeholder reviews.
- Manage vendor and partner relationships relevant to video delivery, platform performance, and technology tooling.
Financial & Budget Management
- Develop and manage the department's operating budget, including labor, tools, and vendor costs.
- Monitor budget performance, identify variances, and recommend corrective actions to maintain alignment with financial targets.
- Evaluate capital and operational expenditure requests from the team and make prioritization recommendations.
Reporting & Communication
- Provide regular operational reporting to senior leadership, including performance dashboards, incident summaries, and strategic initiative updates.
- Communicate clearly and proactively with internal stakeholders regarding operational status, risk, and improvement roadmaps.
What you’ll need to be successful:
Required Experience
- 5 – 7 years of professional experience in video operations, broadcast operations, media technology, or a closely related field.
- 2 – 4 years of direct people management experience, with demonstrated success leading supervisors or individual contributors in an operational environment.
- Proven track record of owning departmental strategy and executing against annual operational plans.
Knowledge & Skills
- Deep subject matter expertise in video delivery, broadcast or streaming operations, signal management, or related technical domains.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to evaluate complex, multi-variable operational situations and develop effective, creative solutions.
- Solid understanding of current business and technology trends affecting video distribution, OTT/streaming platforms, or linear broadcast.
- Demonstrated ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence programs.
- Experience developing and managing operating budgets and reporting financial performance against plan.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders at multiple levels of the organization.
- Proficiency in building and administering team schedules, performance requirements, and workforce plans.
Leadership Competencies
- Leads with accountability: sets clear expectations, follows through on commitments, and holds the team to a high standard.
- Thinks strategically: connects day-to-day operational decisions to longer-term business outcomes.
- Develops talent: actively coaches and invests in the growth of team members, including future supervisors and senior individual contributors.
- Drives results: brings a solutions-oriented mindset to complex problems; does not wait for perfect information to make sound decisions.
- Builds relationships: cultivates trust across teams and functions; communicates with clarity and purpose.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Engineering, Media Technology, Operations Management, or related discipline); equivalent experience will be considered.
- Experience operating in a 24x7 operational environment with on-call or escalation responsibilities.
- Familiarity with DIRECTV's video distribution infrastructure, sports programming and operations, platform ecosystem, or content delivery architecture.
