Position Title
Position Summary / Career Interest:
Supervises the daily operations of the clinical laboratory, including personnel and testing resources. Ensures ongoing compliance with all quality and accreditation organization requirements. Organizes work flow and resources to ensure efficient and cost-effective operation. Coordinates department functions including quality control, personnel training, department maintenance, procedure updates, and represents departments at appropriate organization meetings.Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions- Monitors and documents the performance of personnel assigned to the section. Efficiently addresses performance problems. Assists the Lab Manager with addressing employees' failure to conform to medical center and departmental behavior expectations. Assists the Lab Manager with annual performance evaluations.
- Organizes workflow to maximize efficiency within the department.
- Evaluates and implements new procedures and instruments, updating existing methodology in a timely manner.
- Is knowledgeable with and complies with all regulatory requirements for CAP inspection and accreditation Standards
- Organizes, updates, and monitors quality control and preventative maintenance programs within their section. Monitors the accuracy and timely handling of all proficiency testing surveys within the section. Ensures that the proficiency testing quality assurance program is acceptable with accreditation standards.
- Reviews, updates, and writes departmental technical procedures within acceptable accreditation standards.
- Completes and documents the technical competency for all employees according to applicable accreditation standards.
- Ensures departmental compliance with CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and other Accreditation agencies.
- Works independently, organizing work to meet deadlines.
- Assists the Lab Manager and Department Director with budget development for capital equipment, supplies and personnel within the budget cycle timeframes. Responsible for maintaining budgetary compliance regarding staffing and other expenses in accordance with actual volumes.
- Assists with Med Tech schedules.
- Serve as CAP Inspector every other year, as needed.
- Assures department and associate schedule are completed accurately, published timely, and updated as changes occur. Assures that associate time records are completed accurately and timely.
- Reviews and approves time off requests in accordance with department processes, and communicated accordingly.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- Associates Degree and educational requirements as required to become certified with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency (NCA), or the American Medical Technologists (AMT) OR
- Bachelors Degree or educational requirements as needed to become certified with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency (NCA), the American Medical Technologists (AMT) OR
- Must have completed an HEW approved school of Medical Technology or the successful completion of a United States Military Laboratory training program and a minimum of 10 years of hospital lab experience required without certification OR
- 1 or more years of experience in the clinical laboratory field required without a Bachelor's degree
- 1 or more years of experience in a hospital laboratory setting
Required Licensure and Certification
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP) upon Hire
