The Chula Vista Police Department has a current vacancy for an Intern, which will be filled at either the Undergraduate ($16.90 - $20.54 per hour) or Graduate ($18.59 - $22.60 per hour) level.

This recruitment is for one part-time, non-benefited position limited to 919 hours of employment in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) with an average of less than 30 service hours per work week. Unclassified hourly employees are paid on an hourly or per diem basis and shall not be eligible for benefits nor be subject to Civil Service Rules. Although hourly employees are at-will, they are still subject to all other City policies and procedures.

This current vacancy is within the Research, Crime, & Intelligence Analysis Unit and will assist with special projects. 

Functions of the Position:

Under direct supervision, the Intern will provide support for the following:

  • Understand how Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems work and monitor multi-channel public safety radio communications in support of law enforcement operations. 
  • Assist in monitoring real-time emergency incidents through 911 calls, police radio traffic, drone feeds, surveillance technology, and other public safety systems while maintaining professionalism in high-stress and potentially graphic situations. 
  • Utilize established law enforcement radio procedures, dispatch protocols, and 10-codes to support effective emergency response. 
  • Review calls for service, incident reports, bulletins, and other public safety information to identify crime trends, patterns, and emerging issues. 
  • Collect, organize, analyze, and maintain crime and public safety data to support operational and investigative efforts. 
  • Prepare statistical reports, analytical products, dashboards, and recurring performance metrics using databases, spreadsheets, SharePoint, and other data management tools. 
  • Conduct research and provide analytical support for crime analysis projects, operational planning, special requests, and public records inquiries. 
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and timely dissemination of public safety information. 
  • Collaborate with law enforcement personnel and other stakeholders to provide timely intelligence and operational support. 
  • Perform related analytical, administrative, and operational duties as assigned to support the mission of the department.
In addition, duties may include but are not limited to the following: perform paraprofessional level work specific to the department's needs; use initiative and application of skills and education; work semi-independently and be resourceful and systematic in approach to various assignments and tasks; may be responsible for a significant level of a department project or be part of the project team.Experience and Training
Undergraduate Level: Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program (e.g., Associate's or Bachelor's degree program) or completion of Associate's degree. Degree program is to be in a related field to the department's mission. Previous work experience is not required. 

Graduate Level: Current enrollment in a Graduate degree program (e.g., Master's, Doctorate or Juris Doctorate degree program) or completion of Bachelor's degree. Degree program is to be in a related field to the department's mission. Previous work experience is not required.
 
License or Certificate
Valid California driver's license and proof of insurance may be required by a department.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:  basic knowledge of a discipline that is considered valuable to the department; and  computer equipment and software applications related to assignments. Ability to: keep work related records and prepare reports using a computer; read and interpret typical business correspondence, reports and City or department policies; maintain records and prepare simple reports; follow either written or oral instructions; present ideas in a clear and effective manner; make presentations where applicable; coordinate multiple activities; use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.

Physical Demands and Working Environment
Dependent upon the department, the Intern (Undergraduate/Graduate) must be able to work indoors or outdoors in various weather conditions when required.  Work is scheduled to meet the Intern's college class schedule and the needs of the department whenever possible.
