POSITION SUMMARY:
The Pharmacy Technician – Cancer Center works with the pharmacist to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the Cancer Center Pharmacy. Most of their time (approximately 80%) is spent compounding medications in both hazardous and non-hazardous IV rooms. They also assist the Chief Pharmacist with assuring quality control and adherence to policies and procedures pertaining to the IV Room. Duties within their scope of responsibility are: train and orient the Pharmacy Technicians in sterile compounding procedures, IV room quality reports, clean room procedures, managing Cancer Center Pharmacy inventory, is responsible for procurement, receiving and inventory control of pharmaceuticals, and for processing purchase orders and invoices. They will assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications and maintaining patient records to assure that patients receive pharmaceutical care which is consistent with the mission of the department and the organization. They work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. These activities are performed within the context of established policies, procedures and techniques of Enloe Medical Center, the Enloe Medical Center Pharmacy, and federal and state standards and regulations. The Pharmacy Technician supports and contributes to the service excellence mission of Enloe Medical Center and the Pharmacy Department.
EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:
Minimum:
Two years of hospital experience in an inpatient, decentralized setting.
Experience with sterile compounding and chemotherapy admixing and preparation.
Desired:
Completed a Chemo Certification Course.
Computer experience with pharmacy programs and with Windows.
LICENSE / CERTIFICATION:
Minimum:
Currently registered as a Pharmacy Technician in good standing by the State of California.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
Ability to work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to compound IV medications for most of the required shift. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule, organize and perform all duties with accuracy and efficiency. Knowledge of pharmacy terminology, abbreviations, brand and generic names of medications, and CII Safe/PYXIS operations. Ability to use a computer keyboard and to learn required functions on pharmacy computers. Ability to transcribe pharmacy and nursing records; transcribe physician orders from an NCR copy. Ability to use a calculator and perform pharmaceutical calculations. Ability to manipulate needles, syringes, ampoules and vials using aseptic technique. Understanding of policy and procedure for pharmaceutical special preparations. Ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives and choose the appropriate course of action. Ability to utilize good telephone etiquette. Demonstrate a desire to learn more and actively pursue that desire. Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.
