POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Modular Designer - SolidWorks - Electrical develops detailed 3D electrical layouts and production documentation for TAS packaged modular systems. Working under the direction of Electrical and Controls Engineering and in coordination with mechanical, structural, piping, manufacturing, and project teams, the designer converts engineering inputs, customer requirements, equipment data, and installation constraints into accurate SolidWorks models, drawings, schedules, and bills of materials. The role is responsible for the physical integration and documentation of electrical equipment and interconnections on skids and modules, with emphasis on safety, code compliance, manufacturability, installation access, serviceability, configuration control, quality, schedule, and labor budget.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Electrical Design and Technical Execution
- Review and interpret P&IDs, electrical one-line diagrams, control schematics, points lists, I/O lists, equipment schedules, vendor drawings, specifications, customer requirements, and applicable project standards.
- Develop and maintain coordinated 3D SolidWorks models and assemblies for electrical systems and components, including, as applicable, switchgear, busway, motor control centers, panelboards, transformers, variable-frequency drives, control panels, disconnects, junction boxes, instruments, cable tray, conduit, flexible/MC cable paths, supports, and grounding/bonding components.
- Establish and document practical routing paths for power, control, instrumentation, fire alarm, and communications cabling while accounting for cable type and outside diameter, bend radius, fill or capacity, voltage and signal segregation, support, entry and termination locations, pulling and installation access, and maintenance clearances.
- Produce and revise complete electrical design packages in coordination with Electrical and Controls Engineering, including one-line diagrams, point-to-point and interconnection drawings, elementary or control schematics, panel and equipment layouts, cable tray and conduit plans, wiring and termination details, cable/wire/termination schedules, I/O documentation, bills of materials, and installation details.
- Coordinate electrical equipment placement and routing with structural, mechanical, piping, controls, architectural, and site interfaces; identify clashes, access conflicts, unsupported routes, and constructability concerns before release.
- Create, configure, and maintain accurate SolidWorks parts, assemblies, vendor models, electrical library components, custom properties, connection and routing references, drawing views, details, dimensions, callouts, and BOM structures.
- Verify that models, drawings, schedules, and BOMs remain synchronized and that item numbers, descriptions, quantities, manufacturer data, cable and wire information, and revision status are accurate before release.
- Incorporate engineer-approved equipment selections, load information, conductor and cable selections, protective-device data, grounding requirements, and vendor information into the design documentation without independently assuming engineering authority.
Coordination, Quality, and Production Support
- Participate in model reviews, design reviews, drawing checks, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings; resolve comments and document design decisions in accordance with TAS proceduresSupport Purchasing, Manufacturing, Quality, assembly personnel, panel shops, field installation, startup, and commissioning by answering design questions, resolving fit-up or routing issues, and issuing controlled revisions, redlines, change notices, and as-built updates.
- Coordinate with Engineering, Project Management, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, vendors, customers, and other stakeholders to obtain missing information and communicate design risks, scope changes, schedule impacts, and open technical issues.
- Deliver accurate, production-ready models and drawings within assigned schedule and labor-budget commitments while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
- Help develop and improve SolidWorks templates, modeling and routing standards, drawing practices, design checklists, component libraries, and repeatable modular architectures.
- Adhere to TAS policies, document-control requirements, quality procedures, and safety expectations; travel to manufacturing, vendor, customer, or project sites as required and perform other duties assigned by TAS.
JOB SKILLS:
- Advanced hands-on SolidWorks modeling and drafting capability, including the ability to independently produce reliable parts, complex assemblies, layouts, section and detail views, dimensions, callouts, and production-ready drawing packages with limited direction.
- Strong working knowledge of industrial electrical equipment, electrical commodities and the physical integration of power-distribution, controls, instrumentation, communications, grounding, and cable and conduit management systems within packaged equipment.
- Ability to read and reconcile one-lines, schematics, point-to-point diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel schedules, I/O lists, cable schedules, vendor submittals, P&IDs, and mechanical or structural layouts.
- Strong spatial reasoning and attention to electrical clearances, equipment access, cable routing, support, bend radius, segregation, termination space, installation sequence, serviceability, and manufacturability.
- Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC/NFPA 70 and relevant UL and IEC requirements; ability to apply project-specific requirements under engineer direction.
- Strong drawing-checking discipline and ability to identify incomplete, inconsistent, conflicting, or non-manufacturable design information before release.
- Practical problem-solving ability and sound judgment when translating engineered requirements into buildable modular designs.
- Effective written, verbal, and cross-functional communication skills, including the ability to document technical issues and coordinate with engineers, designers, manufacturing personnel, vendors, and field teams.
- Ability to plan and prioritize assigned work, manage several projects or drawing packages concurrently, and consistently meet quality, schedule, and labor-budget commitments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and related business and documentation software.
EDUCATION & TRAINING:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree, technical certificate, or formal training in drafting, design, electrical engineering technology, controls technology, or a related technical discipline preferred.
- A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, engineering technology, or a related field is preferred but not required.
- Direct, relevant industry experience may substitute for formal post-secondary education.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of electrical or controls design/drafting experience in industrial equipment, manufacturing, modular construction, power distribution, MEP systems, or a comparable engineered-product environment.
- 5+ years of hands-on SolidWorks experience creating and revising 3D parts, assemblies, layouts, and production drawings; candidates whose experience is primarily limited to 2D drafting must demonstrate equivalent 3D capability.
- Experience producing manufacturing- or installation-level electrical drawings, schedules, BOMs, and controlled design documentation from engineering inputs.
- Experience laying out electrical equipment and cable-management systems in coordinated 3D assemblies and resolving interferences, access constraints, and discipline interfaces.
- Experience working within a document-control, PDM/PLM, or formal revision and change-management process.
- Ability to perform intermediate mathematical tasks and basic electrical-design support calculations for engineer review.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
SolidWorks Design and Data Management
- 5+ years of recent, production-level SolidWorks experience supporting complex, multi-level industrial or packaged-equipment assemblies.
- Experience with SOLIDWORKS Routing and/or SOLIDWORKS Electrical 3D for electrical component placement, route-path definition, wire and cable routing, from-to data, length calculation, segregation rules, and route or harness documentation.
- Experience with SOLIDWORKS Electrical Schematic Professional or a comparable electrical CAD platform for one-lines, multi-line schematics, wiring and termination drawings, cable/wire lists, I/O documentation, reports, and BOM generation.
- Advanced assembly skills, including top-down or layout-driven design, in-context modeling, configurations, display states, design tables, mate references, coordinate systems, interference detection, and large-assembly performance practices.
- Experience creating and maintaining electrical libraries and reusable content, including manufacturer parts, symbols, macros, 3D footprints, cable and wire data, connectors, custom properties, routing points, connection points, and approved vendor models.
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM/EPDM workflows, including references, check-in/check-out, data cards, revision control, state changes, controlled releases, BOM data, and coordination between Electrical projects and vaulted 3D files.
- Experience developing SolidWorks drawing templates, sheet formats, BOM templates, design checks, standardized notes, library practices, macros, or other repeatable automation that improves design quality and throughput.
- Formal training or certification in SolidWorks mechanical design, Electrical Schematic, Electrical 3D, Routing, or PDM.
Electrical, Controls, and Modular Systems
- Data-center, chiller-plant, central-utility-plant, mission-critical, or modular MEP packaged-equipment design experience.
- Experience integrating low-voltage power distribution and industrial controls equipment such as switchgear, busway, motor control centers, VFDs, transformers, panelboards, UPS systems, PLC/control panels, junction boxes, disconnects, instruments, and networked controls.
- · Experience with cable tray, conduit, MC cable, flexible connections, wireway, raceway supports, grounding and bonding, equipment entry and termination, and power/control/data segregation in a manufacturing or construction environment.
- · Working knowledge of NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 79, UL 508A, UL 891, and applicable IEC requirements; experience in a UL-listed manufacturing or panel-shop environment is a plus.
- · Familiarity with PLC hardware, I/O architecture, HMI/SCADA systems, sensors, actuators, industrial networks, and controls documentation; programming experience is helpful but not required.
- · Experience supporting fabrication, panel construction, factory testing, field installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, redlines, and as-built documentation.
- · Proficiency with AutoCAD or AutoCAD Electrical; familiarity with Revit, Navisworks, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or comparable BIM coordination tools.
- · Experience with Infor LN or a comparable ERP system and maintaining item-master, BOM, and procurement data.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The position requires spending approximately 80% to 95% of the workday at a desk using a computer. The employee must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently. The position requires use of the fingers, sitting, stooping, bending, crouching, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Visual acuity requirements include color vision, depth perception, and a field of vision sufficient to prepare and analyze data, operate a computer terminal, and conduct extensive reading. The incumbent will be subject to indoor environmental conditions.
