The Position
Mechanic PlantJob Summary
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
Perform the installation, maintenance and repair of all surface and underground site mechanical equipment related to the mine development, including but not limited to all surface mobile equipment and all underground mobile equipment.
Have a good understanding of diesel engines, mechanical, hydraulic & electric systems used on mobile equipment.
JOB SCOPE/ KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Including but not limited to the following:
Comply with all Imerys, MSHA and Equipment Mfg Policies and Safety Policies and Procedures.
Completes the Daily Safety Check, Mobile Equipment Safety Check, Work Area Inspection, LOTO, Job Assessments and Hot Works Permit, Working at Heights and Confined Space and any other worksheets needed for the department.
Receives oral or written instructions from Supervisor and selects required materials and equipment to perform the job.
Follows established procedures in shutting down and disassembling equipment, replacing damaged or worn parts and reassembling equipment, damaged or worn parts and testing equipment to perform to required specifications.
Repairs, rebuilds, modifies and/or adjusts equipment and parts to suit production requirements.
Repairs and maintains all equipment in accordance with the preventative maintenance program.
Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicle maintenance for industrial machines and equipment and keep equipment service records.
Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints and technical drawings.
Overhaul and test machines or equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in their workplace
Repair and maintain mobile mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, such as cranes, bulldozers, graders and conveyors used in and surface and underground mining. Excludes Rail Car Repairers and Diesel Engine Specialists.
Any other job duties assigned by management.
Perform the following activities under limited indirect supervision in accordance with established procedures:
Performs preventative maintenance on tools/equipment utilized in the production operations.
Perform pre-shop analysis involving a number of major systems and components of vehicles.
Drives vehicles as required in diagnosing malfunctions and placing them in an operable condition for pre-inspection.
Utilized a variety of gauges and instruments such as inside and outside micrometers.
Removes end plates of transmissions to adjust and examine for wear and damage.
Rebuild/repair, assemble and adjust applicable functional test of major mechanical systems.
Diagnoses malfunctions of defective units and repairs/replaces items as required.
Determines causes of malfunctions.
Performs repair from minor adjustment to complete rebuild.
Assemble gear systems, and align frames and gears.
Fit bearings to adjust, repair or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
Weld or solder broken parts and structural members, using electric or gas welders and soldering tools.
Adjust, maintain, and repair or replace subassemblies, such as transmissions and crawler heads, using hand tools, jacks and cranes.
Uses a variety of hand tools and measuring instruments such as micrometers.
Utilizes blueprints/schematics, technical publications and DMWR’s as required.
Visually checks over vehicles to identify missing parts of deficiencies prior to release.
Makes any replacement necessary where repair is found impractical.
Provide coordination, on-the-job assistance, and/or limited technical direction to employees performing similar work.
Perform other duties as assigned and qualified.
Works inside and outside. Will be exposed to various weather conditions.
Frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, noise, heat, dust, fumes, oil and grease.
Frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises and sprains.
Required to push, pull, turn and position parts and tools.
Lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists and cranes.
Performs strenuous work while standing or sitting. Frequently carries items weighing in excess of 44 pounds. Constant lifting, bending, stooping, carrying and reaching while standing and/or sitting.

Education and Experience requirements:
High School diploma, training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, or an associate's degree.
