Position Summary
The Business Systems Manager plays a critical role in advancing the Architectural Metals strategic technology roadmap and managing daily operations across all brands. The role works closely with the Sr. Director, IT Business Relationship Management to advance the Vision and Strategy into tangible outcomes aligning with the current and future needs of the business. This role will be critical in technical leadership not only day to day but in driving transformation with modern, best in class technology platforms. This leader will act as a strategic partner with business leaders to standardize across brands and help shape the future operating model. This will enable operational efficiencies and establish key capabilities essential to margin improvement and growth strategies.
This role will utilize understanding of current technology solutions to ensure IT services meet the needs of the business and are delivered in accordance with Apogee IT Standards and best practices. It is expected this role drives improvements in these areas to bring in leading and best practices to help revise or establish standards where needed.
Key Responsibilities
Project Responsibilities
Partner with IT and business leaders to develop, align, and execute technology initiatives that support the Architectural Metals roadmap and business strategy.
Work with business and IT resources to define project concepts, objectives, scope, benefits, budgets, timelines, resource needs, and expected business outcomes.
Provide technical leadership, plan, coordinate, and manage IT efforts to enhance current business systems and implement new project initiatives across ERP, CPQ, customer portals, reporting, integrations, and manufacturing systems.
Partner with enterprise IT, vendors, business process owners, and subject matter experts to ensure project solutions are technically sound, scalable, secure, compliant, and aligned with Apogee standards.
Participate in project governance by working with the Metals PMO and IT to support milestone planning, status assessment, issue and risk escalation, resource coordination, and decision-making needed to keep initiatives moving.
Translate existing business process and system knowledge into practical requirements, design input, test support, deployment planning, and post-go-live stabilization activities.
Maintain awareness of technology trends to identify opportunities for standardization, modernization, reuse, and improved long-term operating efficiency.
Daily Operational Support
Provide daily operational support for core business systems across Architectural Metals, including ERP, CPQ, customer portal, reporting, integration, and manufacturing-support applications. This includes coordinating with business process owners and subject matter experts to sustain reliable daily operations, reduce recurring issues, and identify opportunities to standardize or improve support processes.
Partner with business users, IT teams, and vendors to triage, prioritize, and resolve production issues with appropriate urgency based on business and customer impact.
Manage intake and enhancement requests by clarifying business requirements, assessing value, coordinating technical review, and ensuring changes follow Apogee IT standards and governance. This includes security, access, and SOX-related activities.
Maintain working knowledge of operating models of all brands and system dependencies including cross-brand process flows.
Provide practical technical leadership and escalation support for business-critical operational issues, including reporting, data, integrations, customer-facing portals, and manufacturing execution dependencies.
Ensure support documentation, ownership, and knowledge transfer are maintained so recurring operational work is sustainable and less dependent on individual tribal knowledge.
Management of Resources and Budget
Coordinate and manage full-time, part-time and project-based IT resources to most effectively meet service level, project and career progression requirements.
Manage resources effectively and provide ongoing and performance reviews, salary administration, coaching, and employee development to meet operational goals.
Continue to learn and grow professionally. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, benchmarking state-of-the-art practices, participating in professional societies.
Establish and manage funding for projects and support annual operational budgets for technology and services. Manage contracts and vendors in area of responsibility.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of business systems, application support, and manufacturing processes, including Quote-to-Order-to-Cash, ERP, CPQ, portals, reporting, integrations, and manufacturing-support applications.
- Ability to translate business objectives into practical process design, requirements, solution priorities, testing, deployment, change management, and post-go-live support plans.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and client service skills with the ability to assess business impact, clarify needs, manage expectations, and drive timely resolution.
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to coordinate resources, influence priorities, support project governance, and drive accountability across business, IT, vendor, and SME groups.
- Ability to work within Apogee standards, governance, security, access control, change management, and SOX-related processes while identifying opportunities to standardize, modernize, and improve business system capabilities.
Education and Experience
- Education
- BS MIS, Comp Science or equivalent experience.
- MBA or advanced degree preferred
- Experience
- Minimum 5 years of progressive IT related and/or supervisory experience.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on business system/application support experience.
- ERP and CPQ functional experience with full implementation lifecycle preferred
- Full end to end experience in Quote to Order to Cash for a manufacturing business
- Proven leadership and management skills.
Work Environment
- Hybrid schedule with in-office presence 4 days a week. Interaction as needed at manufacturing locations.
Travel Requirements
- Approximately 10% across the US and Canada. Additional intermittent travel may be required based on business needs.
