About the role
We are seeking an accomplished claims executive to serve as Managing Director, Complex Claims, a key leadership role responsible for driving claim excellence, technical expertise, talent development, and operational performance across a nationwide complex casualty claims organization. This role provides strategic leadership over a team of Complex Claims Directors who adjudicate Auto and General Liability claims and serves as a trusted advisor to senior claims leadership in shaping claim practices, enhancing litigation management strategies, and delivering superior claim outcomes. The successful candidate will be a recognized technical expert, an influential people leader, and a catalyst for organizational improvement and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Partner with senior claims executives to establish and execute the organization's vision for complex casualty claims handling.
- Drive consistency, technical excellence, and operational discipline across a geographically dispersed claims organization.
- Influence enterprise-wide claim strategies, policies, and best practices that improve quality, efficiency, and customer outcomes.
Talent Development & Leadership
- Lead, coach, and mentor Complex Claims Directors to achieve exceptional technical and leadership performance.
- Build a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.
- Identify and develop future leaders through focused succession planning and talent development initiatives.
- Foster an environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.
Technical Excellence
- Serve as a senior subject matter expert on complex casualty claims, coverage analysis, litigation strategy, and claim resolution.
- Establish and maintain claim handling standards that promote superior customer and business outcomes.
- Provide guidance on high-severity and complex claims, ensuring appropriate reserving, investigation, negotiation, and resolution strategies.
Quality & Performance Management
- Conduct comprehensive audits and reviews to evaluate claim quality, consistency, and adherence to best practices.
- Leverage data analytics and performance metrics to identify trends, opportunities, and emerging risks.
- Recommend and implement solutions that improve operational effectiveness and claim outcomes.
Litigation & Vendor Management
- Direct litigation management strategies designed to achieve optimal results while controlling expenses.
- Partner with defense counsel, experts, and vendors to ensure high-quality representation and effective cost management.
- Drive best practices related to litigation strategy, settlement evaluation, and trial preparation.
Transformation & Innovation
- Champion initiatives that leverage technology, analytics, and automation to improve claim performance.
- Lead organizational change initiatives that enhance efficiency, scalability, and customer experience.
- Continuously evaluate industry trends and emerging risks to position the organization for future success.
Required Experience
- Leadership experience managing complex casualty claims a plus.
- Deep expertise in casualty claims handling, litigation management, coverage analysis, and claim strategy.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
- Exceptional executive presence and communication skills.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to influence across functions and organizational levels.
- Demonstrated success leading through change and driving organizational transformation.
- Data-driven approach to performance management and operational improvement.
- Advanced knowledge of insurance policies, coverage interpretation, and casualty claim handling practices.
- Expertise in evaluating complex exposures, damages, litigation risks, and settlement strategies.
- Strong understanding of claim operations, performance metrics, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Hold state all required adjusting licenses or secure within 180 days.
