Job Description

Located approximately 100 miles north of Seattle, the AltaGas | ALA Energy Ferndale Terminal stores and exports liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), including propane and butane, to both domestic and international markets. Strategically positioned on the Pacific Northwest coast, the terminal receives product by rail, truck, and pipeline before storing, processing, and loading LPG for local distribution and export to global customers.

The facility is supported by a highly skilled workforce committed to safe, reliable, and responsible operations. AltaGas recognizes that the terminal operates on the traditional and ancestral lands and waterways of the Lummi Nation and Coast Salish peoples and is committed to being a responsible neighbor and community partner.

Reporting to terminal leadership, this role serves as a trusted Coordinator to operations, maintenance, and contractor teams on health, safety, emergency preparedness, and security matters. The Coordinator is responsible for identifying operational risks, interpreting regulatory requirements, providing guidance to leaders, and supporting the development and continuous improvement of site programs and management systems.

Working closely with employees, contractors, leadership, and regulatory stakeholders, the successful candidate will influence safety culture, promote operational excellence, and support compliance with applicable federal, state, local, marine, rail, and company requirements. This position requires strong judgment, initiative, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a visible field presence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide health, safety, and security guidance and recommendations to operational leaders, supervisors, and employees.

  • Support the implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of health, safety, emergency preparedness, and security management systems.

  • Advise leadership on regulatory requirements, emerging risks, and industry best practices to support compliance and operational excellence.

  • Lead or participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses, corrective action development, and lessons learned activities.

  • Analyze safety performance trends and metrics to identify opportunities for proactive risk reduction and continuous improvement.

  • Facilitate hazard assessments, workplace inspections, audits, and field observations, providing recommendations to address identified risks.

  • Support management of the site's Process Safety Management (PSM) and operational risk management initiatives, as applicable.

  • Partner with operations and maintenance teams to assess risks associated with operational changes, projects, contractor activities, and maintenance work.

  • Support emergency preparedness programs through planning, drills, exercises, and continuous improvement of response capabilities.

  • Provide oversight and guidance regarding contractor safety performance and compliance with site requirements.

  • Support facility security programs, regulatory obligations, and access control processes while promoting security awareness across the workforce.

  • Coordinate and deliver safety-related training, orientations, and workforce engagement initiatives.

  • Develop reports, recommendations, and presentations for site leadership regarding safety performance, compliance activities, and improvement opportunities.

  • Build positive relationships throughout the organization and contribute to a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Certificate, Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Emergency Management, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Safety, Security Management, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressively responsible health, safety, security, or operational compliance experience within an industrial environment.

  • Experience in energy, marine terminal, rail, petrochemical, oil and gas, or other high-hazard operations is preferred.

  • Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local health, safety, security, and environmental regulations.

  • Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analysis, risk assessments, and corrective action management.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, and develop practical recommendations.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and build credibility with leaders, frontline employees, and contractors.

  • Effective communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently with limited supervision.
