Your unique talents will help shape the future of healthcare while building a career grounded in purpose, growth, and impact.
A Day in the Life
We are seeking a Senior Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to provide technical leadership for the design and development of complex consumable components, instruments and sterile-use assemblies for advanced medical devices and robotic applications. The role will combine deep mechanical design expertise, hands-on engineering and systems-level judgement to progress solutions from concept through verification, validation and manufacturing transfer. This is a senior individual-contributor role with significant influence across multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate will define mechanical architecture, lead critical design decisions and ensure solutions meet requirements for performance, reliability, usability, manufacturability, serviceability, cost and regulatory compliance. The role will be based at the Mervue Campus in Galway, Ireland.
- Lead the design and development of complex consumable components, instruments and sterile-use assemblies for medical devices, with a focus on material selection, manufacturability, sterilisation compatibility, verification and validation.
- Create and review detailed 3D models, assemblies, drawings and design documentation using SolidWorks and Creo.
- Define mechanical architecture and lead tolerance analysis, material selection and detailed component design for high-performance products.
- Lead the development of precision mechanisms involving motion control, actuation and integration with electrical and software systems.
- Provide technical leadership across the full product lifecycle, including concept generation, feasibility, prototyping, design verification, validation, manufacturing transfer and sustaining engineering.
- Collaborate with systems, electrical, software, manufacturing, quality, regulatory and supply-chain partners to deliver robust integrated solutions.
- Ensure designs meet requirements for reliability, usability, manufacturability, serviceability, cost and applicable quality-system expectations.
- Lead design reviews, risk assessments, root-cause investigations and complex technical problem-solving activities.
- Drive best practice in mechanical engineering, including design for manufacture, design for assembly, tolerance stack-up analysis and design documentation.
- Support supplier engagement, prototype builds, test activities and transfer of designs into production.
- Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance across projects and programmes.
- Evaluate new materials, technologies and design approaches to support innovation and continuous improvement.
Key Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, with 10+ years of relevant mechanical design and product-development experience (including technical leadership of complex design activities); OR an Advanced degree with 8 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience designing complex mechanical components, instruments, assemblies or mechanisms.
- Experience in medical-device and/or robotics product development within a regulated environment.
- Proven hands-on capability using SolidWorks and Creo for 3D modelling, assemblies, drawings and design documentation.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, manufacturing processes, assembly methods and tolerance analysis.
- Experience integrating mechanical systems with electrical, software and systems-engineering interfaces.
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems, lead design decisions and influence multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong communication, collaboration and mentoring skills.
- Experience with precision mechanical systems, motion control, miniaturised devices, prototyping, test-fixture design, simulation tools or supplier-led industrialisation is advantageous.
