Description
Job Description Summary
GE Vernova's Grid Engineering team is seeking a Lead Grid Integration & Testing Engineer to join our European operations. This is a unique dual-focus role that sits at the intersection of grid compliance and prototype validation, offering the opportunity to contribute directly to two high-impact areas of our wind turbine development and commercialization pipeline.Approximately 50% of this role is dedicated to grid integration and project compliance — supporting grid certification activities and ensuring wind turbine projects across Europe meet applicable grid code requirements. The remaining 50% is dedicated to prototype test campaign execution — supporting electrical testing at prototype sites, maintaining test equipment, and analyzing test data to drive product development decisions.
This role is ideally suited for a technically strong engineer with hands-on experience in both grid compliance and electrical validation testing, who is eager to work across the full product lifecycle — from grid interconnection requirements through field test execution.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
Grid Integration & Project Compliance (~50%)
- Support grid compliance deliverables for wind turbine projects across European markets, with a focus on Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and other EU markets
- Assess project-specific grid code requirements and evaluate turbine and plant-level capabilities to meet those requirements
- Support development and review of unit and plant certification documentation, including turbine type certificates
- Respond to customer and TSO technical inquiries regarding grid code compliance, turbine performance, and plant-level control settings
- Coordinate with project managers, application engineers, and customers to ensure timely delivery of grid compliance documentation
- Support interpretation and application of relevant European grid codes, TSO technical requirements, and emerging standards (e.g., EU Network Codes, national grid codes)
- Contribute to the consolidation of grid requirements from diverse sources (grid codes, TSO specifications, customer requirements) into product requirement collections
- Collaborate with modeling and simulation engineers to assess compliance through dynamic and transient simulations (e.g., PowerFactory, PSSE, PSCAD)
Prototype Test Campaigns — Electrical Testing (~50%)
- Support and lead electrical test campaigns at prototype wind turbine sites, including:
- Fault Ride-Through (FRT) testing
- Harmonic emission and power quality testing
- Reactive power / voltage control testing
- Frequency response and synthetic inertia testing
- Other electrical performance and operability tests
- Develop and execute test plans, test procedures, and test reports in accordance with applicable standards and internal standard work (e.g., IEC 61400-21, BDEW, national grid code type testing requirements)
- Set up, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot test instrumentation and data acquisition systems used in electrical testing
- Perform post-test data processing, filtering, and analysis — converting raw data to engineering units, evaluating data quality, and drawing technical conclusions
- Develop and enhance automation scripts and tools for data filtering, handling, and analysis (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or equivalent)
- Communicate test results and findings clearly to cross-functional teams including controls, power electronics, and grid engineering stakeholders
- Contribute to improvement of test standard work, procedures, and best practices for electrical validation testing
- Support commissioning and initial operation of prototype turbines at test sites as needed
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related field (Master's degree preferred)
- Significant experience in grid integration, power systems engineering, or wind turbine validation/testing
- Solid understanding of European grid codes and interconnection requirements (e.g., Germany BDEW/VDE-AR-N 4120, Swedish and Dutch TSO requirements, EU Network Codes)
- Hands-on experience with electrical testing of wind turbines or other power generation equipment, including FRT and power quality testing
- Familiarity with power systems modeling and simulation tools (e.g., PowerFactory, PSSE, PSCAD, PSLF, or similar)
- Experience with data acquisition systems, test instrumentation setup, and post-processing of electrical test data
- Ability to interpret grid code requirements and apply them to turbine and plant-level control settings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; German or another European language is a plus
- Willingness to travel to prototype test sites and project locations within Europe (estimated 15–30% travel)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with IEC 61400-21 (power quality measurements for wind turbines) or equivalent grid code type testing standards
- Familiarity with unit and plant certification processes for wind turbines, including interaction with certification bodies (e.g., DNV, TÜV, Bureau Veritas)
- Experience with DFIG or full-power converter wind turbine electrical systems
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for data analysis and test automation
- Experience working within a cross-functional NPI (New Product Introduction) or validation engineering environment
- Understanding of plant-level controls (reactive power compensation, park pilot, STATCOM integration)
- Familiarity with relevant European standards beyond grid codes, including EMC, protection coordination, and substation interface requirements
- Experience in technical customer-facing roles, including responding to TSO or customer technical queries
