Position Summary

With direction from the Zone Manager and Working Supervisor, the Mechanic works with a team of multi-craft mechanics to perform routine and emergency plumbing maintenance tasks for campus facilities. Typical craft-specific work includes but is not limited to the maintenance, installation, repair and inspection of plumbing and piping systems, equipment and fixtures. Additionally, the Mechanic works closely with internal customers including students, faculty and staff to resolve requested maintenance issues and work orders.

Multi-craft maintenance activities may also include pipefitting, and other duties as assigned.

This Mechanic position is a member of the collective bargaining unit, Local #148 International Union of Operating Engineers, AFL-CIO and is classified as as a multi-craft role.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Safely maintains, repairs, and installs a variety of plumbing systems and infrastructure systems such as domestic water systems, storm and sanitary drain systems, hot/chilled water systems, sewage lift stations, sump pump systems, grease/chemical traps, water softeners, water heaters, including valves, fittings, and plumbing fixtures such as toilets, sinks, and drinking fountains.
  • Troubleshoots leaks in supply and drain lines, with cabling as needed.
  • Installs and maintains natural gas piping.
  • Responds to and prioritizes work orders and other requests in a timely, efficient, competent, knowledgeable and friendly manner, providing excellent customer service. Identifies equipment and tools needed to complete work and places orders.
  • Performs preventative maintenance based on the building and utility infrastructure needs.
  • Understands and implements the plumbing code and reads construction drawings, construction specifications, and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must be willing to provide one's own hand tools; be available for emergencies after normal work hours.

Physical Effort:

  • Capable of doing extensive walking, climbing stairs/ladders, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. and other similar physical activity.

  • Typically running or climbing.
  • Typically bending, crouching, stooping.
  • Using tools requiring high dexterity.
  • Frequent lifting 25 lbs. or more.

Equipment:

  • Simple hand tools.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have successfully completed a recognized craft apprenticeship program, a technical school training program (such as a Ranken Technical College two-year certification program) or other equivalent training program.
  • Must be able to obtain a Missouri Class E Driver’s License by the end of the probationary period and cannot drive University owned vehicles until Class E Driver’s License is obtained.

Salary Range

$40.63

The salary rate for this position is determined by the current union contract. Please note that there may be salary differentials for working second or third shifts.
