Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Assembly Supervisor to lead shop-floor employees in a metal manufacturing environment in Detroit, Michigan.
This is a hands-on production leadership position responsible for coordinating daily manufacturing activities, assigning work, maintaining production schedules, controlling labor hours, improving quality and productivity, and ensuring safe and efficient shop operations.
Manual industrial paint booth experience is required. Candidates whose paint experience is limited to robotic or automated paint systems will not be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and coordinate production employees to meet or exceed production targets.
- Plan work schedules, assign personnel, and expedite workflow to meet customer requirements and ship dates.
- Supervise manual paint booth operations and related production activities.
- Coordinate materials required for production and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Perform and oversee first-piece and periodic quality inspections.
- Ensure work conforms to engineering drawings, specifications, policies, and procedures.
- Lead employees to achieve strong results in quality, productivity, cost, safety, and teamwork.
- Implement and support Lean manufacturing layouts, techniques, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Train, coach, motivate, monitor, and evaluate production employees.
- Control labor hours and identify opportunities to improve production efficiency.
- Minimize rework, maintenance costs, and shop supply expenses.
- Maintain shop-floor organization and housekeeping standards.
- Ensure proper safety and incident-reporting procedures are followed.
- Conduct accident and injury investigations as required.
- Identify and escalate production problems that could affect customer schedules or shipping deadlines.
- Review and verify employee production records and timecards.
- Address employee issues professionally and coordinate with Human Resources when appropriate.
- Administer applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) provisions and work rules, including first-step grievance handling.
- Prepare work areas for upcoming production requirements.
- Perform facility opening and closing responsibilities as required.
Required Qualifications
- Manual industrial paint booth experience is required.
- Paint experience must involve manual paint operations—not exclusively robotic or automated paint systems.
- 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing and/or material-handling environment.
- 2+ years of experience directly supervising production employees.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
- Lean manufacturing and/or Continuous Improvement experience.
- Experience coordinating production schedules, labor, materials, quality, and workflow.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to operate a forklift.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in metal fabrication or metal manufacturing.
- Union manufacturing experience.
- Experience administering CBA provisions, work rules, or grievances.
- MIG welding experience.
- Experience with first-piece inspection and shop-floor quality control.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work regularly in an active manufacturing environment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the facility.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work around typical manufacturing conditions, including noise, dust, fumes, and odors.
- Safety glasses and steel-toed footwear are required.
