Job Summary:
The Pharmacy Intern supports safe, accurate, and patient-centered pharmacy services while developing the knowledge, judgment, and professional behaviors required of a future pharmacist. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and within the scope permitted by state and federal law, the intern assists with prescription processing, medication distribution, patient service, clinical and operational activities, and use of pharmacy and electronic health record systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform pharmacist-directed, patient-facing clinical and population health activities that drive measurable patient outcomes, including obtaining medication histories, conducting adherence outreach, administering immunizations, completing health screenings and medication reconciliation, and providing patient education, when trained and legally authorized to do so.
- Provide a consistent, high-quality patient experience by supporting the pharmacist and pharmacy team in delivering safe, accessible, and patient-centered care in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations, organizational policy, and the intern’s authorized scope of practice.
- Support safe and accurate medication therapy by receiving, interpreting, entering, preparing, packaging, labeling, and distributing prescriptions under pharmacist supervision and by consistently following established workflow, quality assurance, and pharmacist verification procedures that protect patients from medication errors.
- Use pharmacy systems and the electronic health record to obtain and maintain accurate patient, prescriber, insurance, and medication information; process prescriptions and third-party claims; document authorized clinical activities; and support continuity, coordination, and safety of patient care.
- Engage directly with patients to collect clinically relevant information, recognize potential medication-related problems, and promptly refer counseling needs, therapeutic concerns, safety issues, and other clinical exceptions to the pharmacist to support timely intervention and improved patient outcomes.
- Deliver a patient-centered, patient-facing experience by welcoming patients, listening actively, communicating with clarity and cultural humility, protecting privacy, addressing routine service needs, and escalating clinical or service concerns appropriately to build trust and support safe care.
- Apply and champion pharmacy policies, procedures, medication safety standards, and patient service practices that support safe, consistent, and clinically appropriate care while developing the competencies required of a future pharmacist.
- Support medication inventory activities, including receiving and storing products, monitoring stock levels and expiration dates, rotating inventory, processing returns or recalls, and maintaining required storage conditions and records.
- Support patient access to prescribed therapies by assisting with claim troubleshooting, prior authorization activities, refill coordination, patient outreach, and communication with prescribers, insurers, and other members of the care team within assigned authority, helping prevent treatment delays and promote continuity of care.
- Protect patients, patient information, and the integrity of pharmacy services by maintaining confidentiality and complying with HIPAA, fraud, waste and abuse requirements, controlled substance safeguards, infection prevention practices, workplace safety standards, and all other applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Contribute to the education and development of students, interns, residents, apprentices, and new staff by sharing appropriate knowledge, responding to questions, and fostering a supportive learning environment that promotes consistent, safe, and patient-centered care.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment; complete assigned opening, closing, and administrative responsibilities; and support efficient pharmacy operations so the care team can deliver timely, safe, and patient-centered services.
- Demonstrate reliability, accountability, ethical conduct, cultural humility, teamwork, and receptiveness to coaching in every patient and team interaction; seek feedback and apply learning to progressively develop the clinical judgment, communication skills, and patient-care competencies expected of a future pharmacist.
- Participate in training, staff meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and assigned projects that strengthen medication safety, patient access, clinical service delivery, and patient outcomes, and perform additional duties consistent with education, training, licensure, and organizational needs.
