Description

Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP is seeking a Legal Applications Engineer to join its Information Technology department. This hands-on engineering role is responsible for the design, configuration, support, integration, deployment, and lifecycle management of the firm’s legal applications, with a strong focus on attorney productivity, document workflows, and modern application delivery.

This role bridges legal application support and modern workplace engineering by ensuring applications are reliable, secure, well-integrated, and consistently delivered across cloud-managed, hybrid, and remote environments.  The ideal candidate has experience in a law firm or professional services environment, understands how attorneys and legal professionals use technology under deadline pressure, and can translate business needs into practical, scalable application solutions.

This position may be performed remotely or in a hybrid capacity. Candidates must reside in a state where the firm maintains an office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineer, configure, maintain, and optimize legal applications that support attorney productivity, document creation, comparison, citation, automation, and matter workflows.
  • Manage the full application lifecycle, including requirements gathering, testing, packaging, deployment, upgrades, integrations, monitoring, and retirement.
  • Support and enhance firm-standard document templates, document automation tools, and related workflows using platforms such as BigHand Create, DocID, HyperStyles, Litera Compare, Best Authority, and similar legal technology tools.
  • Ensure legal applications integrate effectively with iManage Work, Microsoft 365, identity platforms, endpoint management tools, and other enterprise systems.
  • Package, deploy, and manage applications using Microsoft Intune and modern endpoint management practices, supporting the transition from legacy delivery models to cloud-first, policy-driven application delivery.
  • Troubleshoot complex application, integration, performance, and document workflow issues, partnering with attorneys, Practice Services, Help Desk, infrastructure, security, vendors, and other IT teams as needed.
  • Develop repeatable standards, documentation, and operational procedures for application configuration, testing, deployment, support, and change management.
  • Develop scripts, workflows, and repeatable processes to automate manual technical tasks, reduce repetitive support work, improve deployment consistency, and increase operational efficiency.
  • Evaluate application usage, performance, and support trends to identify opportunities for automation, simplification, standardization, and improved user experience.
  • Support the evaluation, configuration, and responsible use of AI-enabled legal technology tools that improve attorney productivity, document workflows, and matter support.
  • Participate in change management, release planning, vendor coordination, and production support processes to minimize risk and ensure reliable service delivery.

Technical Support & Operations

  • Provide advanced support for legal applications, integrations, add-ins, templates, and document production tools used by attorneys and business professionals.
  • Perform root cause analysis for recurring application issues and implement durable fixes that improve reliability and reduce support volume.
  • Test and validate application updates, configuration changes, security updates, and deployment packages before production release.
  • Administer application access, licensing, permissions, and configuration in coordination with security, identity, records, training, and HR processes.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for supported applications, including support procedures, configuration standards, integration points, known issues, and escalation paths.

Collaboration

  • Partner with Practice Services, attorneys, legal assistants, and business stakeholders to understand workflow needs and deliver practical application solutions.
  • Collaborate with IT teams across endpoint, infrastructure, security, service desk, training, and project management to ensure reliable application delivery and support.
  • Work with vendors to resolve issues, plan upgrades, evaluate product roadmaps, and ensure the firm receives value from its legal technology investments.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, with a focus on service quality and attorney experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience supporting, configuring, or engineering legal applications in a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Strong understanding of legal document workflows, Microsoft Word add-ins, document templates, document comparison, citation, and document quality tools.
  • Experience with iManage Work or a comparable document management system.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365, Windows endpoints, application packaging, deployment, and modern management tools such as Microsoft Intune.
  • Familiarity with SaaS applications, cloud-based delivery models, identity and access concepts, integrations, and enterprise support processes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex application issues across desktops, cloud services, integrations, permissions, and user workflows.
  • Strong documentation, communication, prioritization, and vendor management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and exercise sound judgment in a deadline-driven environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with BigHand Create, DocID, HyperStyles, Litera, Best Authority, or similar legal productivity tools.
  • Experience with Intapp products is a plus.
  • Experience with application packaging, PowerShell scripting, endpoint troubleshooting, or automation.
  • Experience participating in application rationalization, modernization, migration, or cloud-first workplace initiatives.
  • Prior experience supporting attorneys, legal assistants, or practice groups in a multi-office law firm environment.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled legal technology, Microsoft 365 Copilot, document automation, or workflow automation tools is a plus.
