Description

1) SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Nurse Instructor is responsible for the offering of quality theoretical and clinical teaching, guidance, supervision and assessment of graduates and staff in developing core competency. Accountable in ensuring the quality and safe patient care practices are adhered to in line with the policies of the hospital.

2) RESPONSIBLE FOR

  • Managing and providing the appropriate clinical Teaching and learning activities of KPJUC and KPJICs graduates and staffs in clinical settings according to policies and standards process.

  • Responsible to teach guide and supervise student nurses, other nurse trainees, new nursing personnel and care assistants in the clinical practice according to the predetermined set of objectives.

  • Responsible to establish close working relationship with staff members of the unit and other department staff as to create a conducive environment for effective learning.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of principles, methods and techniques of performing high standard nursing practice.

3) JOB DESCRIPTION

Organization and Management

  • Understands and carries out the nursing care in line with Vision and Mission Statements, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the Nursing Services.

  • Plans and organizes learning experiences of student nurses clinical requirement:

- Choose and requests the clinical area as predetermined by KPJ International University College in which the objectives of the student’s clinical experience might best be achieved.

- Coordinates and communicates with Unit Managers and Head of Services relating to student nurses learning in their respective unit / ward.

- Keeps detailed progress records of student’s learning experience and achievement.

- Maintains summary records of student’s clinical practice.

- Assists in completion of verification forms of student nurses pertaining to their clinical requirement when required.

- Makes frequent rounds in clinical areas where students are attached to monitor their performance without being obtrusive, gives support and guidance on problems encountered on site (if necessary) and conduct incidental teaching.

  • Evaluation of student nurses, performance during that clinical attachment period by:

- Monitoring their provision of patient focused holistic care to patients assigned to them using Nursing Process approach.

- Documenting proper nursing report on patient’s nursing care plan.

- Team working.

- Assigning individual and group project.

- Assessing clinical performance on chosen nursing procedures by checklist, anecdotal records and self evaluation by students.

- Schedules sessions with students to keep them informed of their progress and identify their learning needs.

- Counsels student nurses with educational and emotional problems and gives personal individual guidance.

- Liaises with the respective KPJIUC nurse lecturer regarding student nurses’ progress, performance and their welfare during this clinical attachment.

- Analyzes periodically and evaluates the progress of student nurses achieving their learning objectives in the specified clinical attachment.

  • Attends and participates in Nurse Instructors meeting at KPJ International University College chaired by its Principal to discuss / solve problems encountered during the student nurses clinical attachments etc. and works towards achieving the same goal i.e. students’ centered and quality training programmes.

  • Attends and participates in hospital and nursing committees as appropriate.

  • Organizes and conducts in the orientation programme not only for student nurses but also for new nurses and care assistants employed in the hospital.

  • Participates in making recommendations for confirmation of new nursing staff.

  • Assists Unit Mangers in organizing and conducting in service education programme to update. Trained Nursing staff on latest trend in any aspect of nursing of Health Discipline.

Human Resource and Management

  • Takes personal responsibility for own professional development and keeps up to date with professional change and growth by maintaining mandatory learning hours.

  • Coordinates internal and external training and workshops.

  • Involves in the supervision of the of staffs:

- Staff nurses.

- Assistant nurses, Midwives, Care Assistant.

- Student nurses who are posted to the unit for their clinical experience and assist them to achieve their objectives of that clinical attachment.

  • Assist the Unit Manager in appraising the job performance of the unit staff nurses by giving accurate feedback with no malice or prejudice.

  • Participates in the development and maintenance of the nursing process when providing patient care as well as nursing documentation.

  • Supports and assists the Unit Manager in effective and efficient utilization of staff, supplies and services.

Policies and Procedures

  • Contributes suggestions in periodic revision and upgrading of Nursing Policies and Procedures and relevant work instructions.

  • Participates in the care, custody and administration of medications in accordance with Hospital Policies and Procedures.

  • Checks daily and audits resuscitation trolley periodically as scheduled.

  • Ensure all staff complies with Prevention and Control of Infection including implementation of surveillance activity in the unit and evidence of involvement.

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient’s personal and medical history.

Facilities and Equipment

  • Operates / maintains specialized equipment assigned to the unit and provides assistance / guidance to new staff in their use.

  • Assists the Unit Manager in keeping accurate records of equipment, medical supplies and drugs in the unit / ward.

  • Checks that all equipment in the ward is functioning well and service according to PPM schedule.

  • Report to Bio Medical personnel if any faulty and takes necessary action accordingly.

  • Assists in maintenance of instruments and equipment by proper cleaning, handling, disinfect and utilizing as directed.

  • Staff will be reminded on maintaining records of equipment and inventory for medical supplies.

Safety and Quality Improvement Activities

  • Fully receptive and supportive in the activities that contribute towards continuous improvement of nursing service e.g. Quality Assurance, Infection Control and Fire and Safety Program.

  • Conduct investigation and root cause analysis in any incident in the services, takes appropriate action and ensure completion of incident reports within stipulated time frame.

  • To carry out duties as an employee as stipulated in Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations 1994:-

- To take reasonable care at work for the safety of yourself and other persons;

- To co-operate with your employer or any other person in the discharge of any duty;

- To wear or use any protective equipment or clothing provided by the employer;

- To comply with any instruction or measure on occupational safety and health.

  • Ensures compliance of Patient safety goals as safety improvement measures recommended by World Alliance for Patient Safety.

  • Ensures the policies on Patient and Family’s Rights are addressed at all times.

  • Complies with the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Breastfeeding Policy, and protect, promote and support Baby Friendly Hospital activities.

  • Participates in 5S activities and comply with the specified requirements.

  • Ensures all staff adheres to Standard People Practice (SPP) at all times.

  • Ensure all policies and regulations of ISO 37001 Anti Bribery Management System (ABMS) are adhered to and responsible for integrity principles, practices and activities at hospitals & companies of and when these programs are implemented.

4) JOB REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelor in Nursing OR Master Qualification.

  • Post Basic qualification in related field.

  • Minimum age 26 years and above.

  • Registered with Nursing Board of Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse.

  • Certificate in Teaching Methodology.

  • Hold Teaching Permit.

  • Registered with Nursing Board of Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse.

  • Experience and diversity in theoretical and clinical teaching.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to guide students.

  • Ability to improve knowledge and skill in teaching and supervision in the clinical areas.

  • Willing to further her knowledge in clinical teaching and supervision as Clinical Nurse Specialist.

  • Caring, honest and responsible worker.

  • Willingness to work on scheduled hours, and weekends, public holidays and anytime when called during emergency.

  • Microsoft office literacy.

  • Has good communication, counseling and interpersonal skills.

  • Able to guide nursing staff and non-nursing staff.

  • Has the ability to improve knowledge and skill in teaching and supervision in the clinical areas.

  • Possess the attitude to make the patient care the primary concern, treating every patient compassionately, demonstrating and an aspiration to altruism.

  • Strive to provide high quality nursing care; maintain patient’s dignity, privacy, autonomy and confidentiality.

  • Prepared to work as a team member in the best possible manner.
