THE POSITION
The City of Bell Gardens is seeking self-motivated, energetic and responsible individuals interested in employment as a Pool Manager/Assistant Pool Manager to help with aquatic programs for youth, teens, families and adults. The aquatic recreation programs are held at City of Bell Gardens’ Aquatics Center. The City of Bell Gardens Recreation & Community Services Department's vision is to create community through people, parks, and programs. Our focus is to provide a safe and fun learning environment for the residents of Bell Gardens to enjoy. Our department is led by a diverse and knowledgeable staff that truly loves recreation and giving back to the community they serve.

PROGRAMS
Areas of work may include swim lessons, recreational swim, special aquatics programs/classes, including training lifeguard staff in-services & American Red Cross (ARC) lifeguard re- certification courses, Senior Services, Community Services, Youth Services, Sports, After School Programs, Special Events, and Department Administration.

POOL MANAGER (open until filled) 
SCHEDULE
20 to 28 hours per week. Individuals in these positions should be available to work a varying schedule of hours which may include mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

MINIMUM & DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum age 18 years old
  • Two (2) years or four (4) summer seasons of aquatic experience as a Swim Instructor, and Sr. Guard or Lead Guard.
  • Equivalent to three (3) years of work experience in recreation. 
  • Ability to effectively deal with the public, communicate orally and in writing, and follow directions.  
  • Direct experience in leadership, volunteer work, or recreation activities is required.

LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATE(S)
  • Valid and current California driver’s license.
  • Possession of a valid American Red Cross/Lifeguarding certificate, or equivalent.
  • Possession of American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer certificate.
  • Possession of a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification
  • Possession of a Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification within one (1) year of employment
  • Preferred and highly desired Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT) certification. 

DUTIES
Assists the Aquatics Coordinator with aquatics center daily operations and supervise the team of Part-Time employees; ARC training courses; provide means of communication between the Coordinator and staff; perform a wide range of administrative tasks such as scheduling staff, purchasing, and taking disciplinary action as needed; assists with the development and implementation of recreation and community service programs and applicable budgets; prepares oral and written reports; assists with reducing safety hazards by effectively communicating with supervisors and creating reports; responsible for supervision of staff members' proper handling of supplies and funds; prepares/reviews accident/incident reports and other reports or administrative memorandums associated with programs in a timely manner; responsible for conduct of program participants and support staff; may transport program supplies and materials in City vehicle; participates in team approach to department tasks, responds to management directives, follows professional protocol and coordinates work with other department staff as needed. Basic equipment and vehicle maintenance; other duties as assigned. 

ASSISTANT POOL MANAGER (open until filled)

DUTIES
Assists the Aquatics Coordinator and Pool Manager with daily operations; assist Pool Manager with their duties; other duties as assigned. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
 May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Interacts and communicates effectively with children, parents, caregivers, volunteers and City staff
  • Maintains constant monitoring of the Aquatics Center, users and staff ensuring safe and proper use of facilities, pool, and equipment
  • Supervise, schedule, and evaluate aquatics staff
  • Support staff/volunteers independently in the absence of the Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Supervisor
  • Direct/assists and supervises the Jr. Lifeguard program
  • Directs/assists and oversees the collection of all fees, and keeps daily records of receipts and deposits according to City policies
  • Enforces pool rules and regulations as they pertain to pool users and staff
  • Directs/assists and supervises the safe opening and closure of the aquatic facility
  • Ensure staff plan and implement swim lesson curriculum
  • Oversee completion of swim lesson evaluations at the close of each session, as well as helps distribute evaluations to the swim lesson participants
  • Maintains daily logs of rescues and other incidents for all aquatic facilities
  • Ensures set-up and cleanup of aquatic facilities for programs
  • Monitors, trains, and coaches new staff 
  • Issues, maintains, and stores equipment and supplies
  • Attends, participates, leads and assists with in-service trainings and meetings
  • Performs the duties of a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor, and other related work as required

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, kneeling, stretching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate pool equipment and tools. The position requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to monitor and communicate appropriate pool activity. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push, pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Basic objectives, methods, and techniques of planned recreation: aquatics, sports, games, and group activities; recreational activities suitable for children; safety practices; knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations, and techniques used in a comprehensive community aquatics and recreation programs.  Organize and supervise the activities of groups using recreational and aquatics facilities; conduct recreational activities; keep simple records and prepare reports and notices; establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; team oriented; skilled in First Aid and CPR.  The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
