Job Description:

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Prepares food for residents, guests and for catered functions according to established menu rotation.
• Reviews menus and makes suggestions for changes, to the Support Services Manager, in consultation with caregiving staff.
• Coordinates food preparation and service in the kitchen.
• Stores perishable food and avoids waste as per established guidelines.
• Advises the Support Services Manager of inventory needs for kitchen equipment & utensils and assists in the purchasing of items.
• Checks accuracy and presentation of served food
• Checks menu items and recommendations as required.
• Participates in department and Quality Improvement activities.
• Informs Support Services Manager of unsafe equipment or conditions and food supply concerns (e.g. Food shortages, food quality concerns, supply availability.)
• Performs all cleaning duties and ensures that Food Services area (storage, kitchen, dining room) are clean, orderly, and meet expected standards. 
• Ensure that all food service areas and equipment are maintained and in good working order. Report any deficiencies to the Support Services Manager. 
• Completes written reports, as required.
• Attends meetings and workshops/inservices.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Standing for long period of time daily to prepare meals. 

• Lifting pots and pans filled with food and carrying supplies. Occasional lifting of boxes, sacks, and other items up to 25 kg. 

• Working with sharp tools/utensils daily. 

• Must be in good physical condition that allows bending, kneeling or stooping to lift items such as loads of dishes, kitchen tools, machinery, and food preparation equipment. 

• Required to wear close-toed, non-skid shoes.  These shoes are a personal expense and must always be worn. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. 

• Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. 

Education, Qualifications and Certifications: 

• High School Diploma/GED 

• Certificate in culinary skills is an added advantage 

• Food Safe Handling Certificate 

• Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion. 

Experience and Knowledge: 

• Minimum 1-year experience in an institutional or commercial kitchen. 
• Strong knowledge of proper food handling procedures, health, and safety standards. 
• Knowledge of food preparation, quantity of food to prepare to minimize wastage and sanitation procedures 

Skills and Capabilities: 

• Good communication skills and be able to work in a team setting. 
• Reliability and punctuality are essential 
• Able to observe all safety precautions and safe work practices. 
• Able to work as relief cook when called upon. 

This is a casual position with no fixed working schedule. There are 2 openings.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $26.56 to $27.89 with a maximum of $29.21.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
