Transit Engineer II (Electrical)

King County's Metro Transit Capital Division is seeking an Electrical Engineer II to support design and delivery of several critical transit capital projects. This role is essential for helping Metro deliver on its mission to expand and enhance transit and mobility services for communities. The Transit Electrical Engineering Team consists of five electrical engineering staff who deliver a wide variety of Electrical projects within Capital. The projects you will work on will have a variety of size and budget and the work will include the preparation of engineering designs, specifications, and design reports, assisting project managers with the establishment of project budgets and schedules, and the performance of quality control reviews of consultant designs. King County Metro is looking for an innovative, collaborative Electrical Engineer to join this team.

Metro's Capital Division supports delivery of a variety of capital programs. As an electrical engineer, you will have an opportunity support Zero Emissions (ZE) infrastructure, including electrifying bus bases and infrastructure along transit corridors. Converting to a fully electrified fleet will impact every division within King County Metro. Significant coordination between the capital and operational divisions will be required during this transition. Strong analytical skills are essential for evaluating exciting engineering challenges and developing coordinated solutions.

In addition, electrical engineers are critical to the regular maintenance and upgrades keep Metro's facilities in good repair and support efficient, safe, and reliable transit operations. Metro incorporates cost-effective green building and sustainable development practices in all capital projects that it plans, designs, constructs, remodels, renovates, and operates. The Capital Division supports other Metro divisions and work groups by ensuring we the infrastructure necessary to meet our service delivery and sustainability goals.

This recruitment will be used to fill 1 Career Service position. In addition, this selection process may be used to generate an eligibility pool for future Career Service, Special Duty Assignment, TLT (Term Limited Temporary) or STT (Short Term Temporary) vacancies that may occur in this classification within this workgroup. In this role you will apply equity and social justice principles to all aspects of the work. You will:

• Review and/or prepare engineering designs for assigned work unit.
• Provide basic engineering designs and assist in engineering designs for transit construction projects, repairs, and modifications to existing facilities. Conduct preliminary design meetings. Perform feasibility studies. Serve as the transit design engineer on less complex projects.
• Plan and conduct engineering tests and analyze test results to determine the suitability of new or existing equipment or systems.
• Assist higher-level staff in coordinating work assignments.
• Update and maintain appropriate engineering records and files such as technical memorandum, drawings, specifications, instruction books, catalogues, contract files and the like, as necessary.
• Assist in preparing project work plans, schedules, and budgets; assemble technical information for use by the project teams.
• Assist in reviews of consultant predesign and final design tasks. Validate economic analyses including technical assumptions and cost factors.  Assist in the procurement process for consultants, equipment and construction work.
• Assist in reviewing consultant design work to identify and resolve potential design coordination conflicts between disciplines; ensure that design standards and code requirements have been implemented.
• Provide technical assistance during construction.

Education & Licensure

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or other relevant engineering discipline from a nationally accredited university.

Minimum Qualifications

• Two years of experience in electrical engineering related to electrical power distribution, lighting, traction power, programmable controllers and fire alarm systems. Experience must demonstrate knowledge of mathematics, physical and engineering sciences and the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design. Experience or responsibility in the completion of basic engineering tasks or projects.

• Metro Transit is a mix of office and industrial environments; the engineer must be able to climb stairs, ladders, access roof and platform mounted equipment, and enter confined spaces. Part of the work to be performed by this position involves on-street passenger facilities. Sites could include urban streets, busy intersections, and undeveloped sites in remote parts of King County.
• Working knowledge of software programs such as Windows, Excel, Word, AutoCAD, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Bluebeam, Teams and Web browsers.
• A valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to get one by time of hire, or ability to travel to work sites in a timely manner.

Desired Qualifications:

• Extensive knowledge in electrical engineering principles.
• Work experience designing multiple, high profile, and complex projects simultaneously.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Civil3D, and GIS and/or Revit (BIM) design software products.
• Experience in working with multi-disciplinary engineering teams.

Work Location
This position follows a hybrid work schedule requiring a minimum of [2] days per week onsite at King Street Center, 201 S Jackson St., Seattle, WA 98104, consistent with King County Metro's hybrid work policy. Remote workdays may be adjusted based on operational or business needs.

Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

Work Schedule 
The work week is normally 40 hours, Monday through Friday. Alternative work schedules may be possible. This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore is not eligible for overtime pay.
