About the Role

Publication speed is an important decision factor within the article submission process – it is one of a few primary factors authors look at when deciding to submit. To improve our publication speeds, in other words to achieve a significant reduction in our turnaround times (TATs), we are looking for a Process Intelligence Analyst. The analyst plays a hands-on role in realizing an optimal flow of our articles along our publishing pipeline of 3k+ journals.  

This role will be instrumental in reducing article TATs, enhancing author experience, and supporting the company’s broader business objectives. Process Intelligence Analysts use tools and techniques to identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas for optimization within an organization’s workflow. This role combines elements of business intelligence, process mining, and data analysis to drive informed decision-making and change management.  

This is a hybrid role based in Berlin or Dordrecht. These locations support effective collaboration with the team and aligns with business needs.

Role Responsibilities

Process Intelligence & Business Insights

  • Analyze publishing workflows using data from Looker, Google BigQuery, and other BI tools, applying strong Data Analytics / Quantitative Skills and knowledge of Publishing Workflows and Systems to generate meaningful insights.
  • Identify inefficiencies and bottlenecks, leveraging Process Optimization and Operational Excellence to recommend actionable improvements.
  • Assist in defining and refining KPIs, data definitions, and reporting frameworks to track publishing speed, quality, and author/reviewer/editor experience, utilizing Data Analytics / Quantitative Skills and a Customer-focus mindset.
  • Create process maps and visualizations to support change initiatives, using Storytelling and Manages Complexity to communicate insights effectively.

Project & Change Management

  • Contribute to cross-functional projects to optimize publication pipelines, applying Process Optimization and Operational Excellence to drive continuous improvement.
  • Support data-informed change and adoption of analytics frameworks by leveraging Manages Ambiguity and Data Analytics / Quantitative Skills to navigate evolving business needs.
  • Assist with stakeholder alignment across Editorial, Production, Technology, and Operations by utilizing Builds Networks and Manages Complexity to foster collaboration and alignment.

Innovation & Automation

  • Collaborate with Product and Tech teams to explore automation and AI-driven solutions, combining Customer / User Requirements Discovery with Publishing Workflows and Systems expertise to identify high-impact opportunities.
  • Support workflow enhancement proposals to reduce manual effort and errors through Process Optimization and a commitment to Operational Excellence.
  • Monitor the performance impact of implemented changes and suggest refinements using Data Analytics / Quantitative Skills and a Customer-focus approach to maximize value.

Stakeholder Communication & Reporting

  • Present complex data insights clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, applying Storytelling and Data Analytics / Quantitative Skills to drive understanding and action.
  • Liaise with Editorial, Publishing Performance, Operations, and Technology teams to align priorities, leveraging Builds Networks and Manages Ambiguity to support effective collaboration.
  • Ensure reporting frameworks are transparent, scalable, and actionable through a combination of Operational Excellence and Process Optimization.

Key Relationships

  • Build effective partnerships with the Publishing Performance & Intelligence Center of Excellence and Editorial Engagement teams through strong Builds Networks capabilities.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Publishing, Publishing Strategy, Production, Operations, and Technology teams, applying a Customer-focus mindset to support organizational objectives.
  • Work with Collection Management, Content Retention, and Research Integrity teams, leveraging Manages Complexity and knowledge of Publishing Workflows and Systems to support cross-functional initiatives.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications:

  • Demonstrable years of experience in data science, data analysis, process intelligence, BI, program/project management, or performance optimization 
  • Demonstrated contributions to improvements in publishing, consulting, tech, or related fields  
  • Experience supporting cross-functional initiatives and stakeholder engagement  
  • Familiarity with editorial and production workflows in publishing or content-driven environment  
  • Proficient in analysing publishing performance metrics, identify pattern and draw meaningful conclusions to drive strategic improvements 
  • Expertise in tools such as Looker, Google BigQuery, Tableau, or PowerBI to extract, transform and visualize data 
  • Creating visual representations of workflows to understand how processes are executed and identify areas of improvement 
  • Skilled in process modelling, task mining and identifying performance bottlenecks 
  • Pinpoint areas where processes are slow, broken or unnecessarily complex 
  • Knowledge of business process management (BPM) and improvement frameworks  
  • Experience supporting cross-functional initiatives and stakeholder alignment 
  • Familiarity with Agile, Lean, Six Sigma methodologies  
  • Emerging project leadership and strategic planning skills  
  • Ability to track performance and value of processes after changes are implemented  
  • Support iterative adjustments based on performance data 
  • Skilled in communicating complex data insights to technical and non-technical audiences 
  • Strong ability to liaise with Editorial, Operations, and Technology teams 
  • Comfortable presenting insights, dashboards and recommendation to senior leadership  
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, Data Analytics, Data Science, Strategic Management, Project Management, or a related field
  • Master’s degree or PhD in a data-intensive field is a plus
  • Certifications in PMP, Agile, or Lean Sigma are a plus
