Job Description:

This is a leading role in our MWF working group. This role will play a key role not only for routine product development and technical support but also have a strategical view to MWF products and identify new growth opportunities for MWF business or technology breakthrough for MWF technology.

Expert Technologist Industrial (Metalworking Fluids) will take the mission of delivering innovative metalworking fluid solutions and added value to internal and external customers in a safe, professional,reliable, and efficient manner. Through inspiring creativity in lubricant and metalworking fluid formulation,
extensive experience in machining and manufacturing applications, and deep expertise in technical services,this role will support customers in improving productivity, machining performance, equipment reliability, and
sustainability across a wide range of industrial sectors.
Expert Technologist Industrial (Metalworking Fluids) will undertake diverse responsibilities as a key memberof Castrol’s local technical platform and global technology community, where Castrol’s core competencies
in metalworking fluid technology are established, maintained, and continuously advanced. The role will contribute to developing differentiated solutions that meet current customer requirements while anticipating future industry trends, manufacturing challenges, and sustainability expectations.
This role will act as a leader, driver, or technical supporter in a broad range of technology programs, projects,and customer cases, with particular focus on metalworking fluid formulation development, formulation optimization and change management, technical problem solving, application support, and expert consultation. The role will contribute to business growth and technology innovation by delivering high-performance solutions for machining, grinding, forming, and other manufacturing processes.

As the Single
Point of Accountability (SPA) within the technology team, the expert technologist will manage end-to-end technical programs throughout the entire product lifecycle and solution delivery cycle, organized by product portfolio, industrial sector, machining process, or application scenario.
As an expert technologist, this role will lead, drive, or support initiatives aimed at strengthening Castrol’s technology capabilities and competitive position in the metalworking fluids market. Working in alignment with business and technology strategies, the role will not only manage routine technical activities but also closely monitor developments in manufacturing technologies, emerging machining processes, regulatory requirements, and advances in fluid technologies. By identifying industry trends and technology gaps, the role will help shape future innovation pipelines and create opportunities for sustainable business growth.
This role will work closely with both local and global technology, marketing, technical service, and commercial teams on strategic programs and projects. Depending on business priorities and technical challenges, the scope may include collaboration with OEMs, machine tool manufacturers, component
suppliers, manufacturing customers, universities, and industry organizations to develop next-generation metalworking fluid technologies and integrated manufacturing solutions.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure daily operations for fulfilling responsibilities in a safe manner and conform to Castrol value, code of conduct and internal policies.

Formulation Technology

  • Have deep understanding of product formulation techniques (base oils, additives, blending, performance assessment etc.) and product applications (portfolio, characteristics of products series/grades, industrial standards etc.) which will lead practical and effective solutions to internal/external customers in industries including automotive, machinery tool, metal manufacturing etc.
  • Be capable of managing the complete product development, technical assessment and product maintenance processes, from ideas/concept, formulation selection to commercialization and post-launch for new products, following internal project management tools.
  • Be familiar with internal processes and policies on formulation development, formulation changes, raw materials management, product deployment and quality management.
  • Be familiar with competitive products and can provide advice and insights to support product performance evaluation and establish Castrol products value proposition. 
  • Provide product/application advice to sales/customers and support CLT Technologist tags with product recommendations for existing business and new business opportunities including support for OEM teams and OEM product approval renewals.
  • Organize or support products promotion, introduction, training or communication with internal or external parties.

Product Applied Technology

  • Demonstrate skillful practices in handling complex trouble-shooting cases by following systematic methods and utilizing various problem-solving tools.
  • Establish and maintain the working procedures with internal stakeholders as the technical peer and get feedback on demands and trends of products, techniques and markets.
  • Build up effective working procedures, schedules and methods to manage routine work, like technical reports, records and plans.   
  • Lead or support technical support and service cases by offering expert insight, design of experiment or product recommendation to identify root cause/failure mode in customer practices and define solutions to troubleshooting cases, typically as metal corrosion, foaming, residuals etc..
  • Support operation unit and supply chain in handling topics including root cause analysis of quality issues, customer complaints and products documents.
  • Provide advice and suggestions to optimize the model, procedure and guidelines to technical support and service activities and introduce the best practice in Castrol organization to Industrial Technology Team worldwide.
  • Provide leadership on the integrity and management of technical data. Support CLT Technologist Tags to ensure that claims are relevant, valid and substantiated for local law and in line with technology and marketing guidance.

Project Management

  • Ensure daily operation of technical programs following internal project management policies.
  • Capable of identifying, developing and landing initiatives on technology innovation projects, targeting new business growth opportunities in China.
  • Lead or support projects in Castrol internal project management systems and contribute valuable ideas which will benefit technology competence or business growth.
  • Maintain and update project management documents on a regular basis.
  • Develop and optimize procedures, approaches and methodologies to manage various projects in categories of formulation development/change, processing optimization and application studies.

Innovation and Engineering

  • Develop technology team’s core technology competence in metalworking fluid areas by high credits of expertise and innovation-oriented research and study on industrial mega-trends, emerging application scenarios and performance demand for lubricants products and competition products.
  • Develop innovative ideas and solutions to customers based on existing working scope by close cooperation with partner functional units within organization or external industrial partners.
  • Monitoring advances and development in lubricant techniques and engineering aeras with utilizing patent screening, industrial intelligence and association membership.
  • Establish Castrol influences on technology with activities in industrial associations, standardization committees, authorities and academic organizations.
  • Develop strategic technical relationships with OEMs, Key Additive Suppliers, Industrial Associations and Universities to enable access to novel, leading edge additive technologies and processes.

Experience & Expertise (mandatory & desired)

  • Deep understanding of formulation technology (chemistry and metallography) and lubricants application scenarios will be highly appreciated.
  • Show the capabilities of management in a systematic and professional approaches.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in problem analysis, experiment design, data processing and reporting.
  • Proven broad experience of product development and technology deployment, especially the capabilities of developing an idea to a solution.
  • Broad knowledge of lubricant science and technology with deep insight to the application scenarios.
  • Wide connections with industrial partners including companies, institutes and researchers.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills and experience of working across teams.
  • Strong capabilities of international and interculture communication in written and oral practices.
  • Degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Engineering or related technical discipline.
