Description

Who We Are
The Department of Psychological Science at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a Carnegie-classified R2 institution in the mainstream of American Catholic higher education, seeks outstanding applicants for the position of Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) who value its Mission and share its commitment to inclusive excellence and the building of a just society. LMU is federally recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) and is recognized by the State of California as a Black-Serving Institution (BSI). These designations reflect the university’s continuing commitment to supporting student success, belonging, and thriving within a diverse academic community. As a Catholic, Jesuit, and Marymount university, LMU values faculty who engage students as whole persons and pursue scholarly work that promotes justice, equity, and the Common Good. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to LMU’s teacher-scholar model. A teacher-scholar conducts research and does creative work that contributes to the larger body of knowledge while setting an example for the importance of lifelong learning.  A teacher-scholar at LMU is dedicated to 1) teaching a diverse student  body in a transformative learning environment, 2) developing a thriving portfolio of research and mentoring students, 3) participating in service activities at the academic, professional, and/or community levels, and 4) working towards greater equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility for all in the profession. Appointment Type and Details

This is a tenure-track faculty appointment. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or terminal degree in Psychology or a closely related field by the position start date of August 15, 2027. This full-time, 9-month academic appointment (August – May) has an annual salary paid over 12 consecutive months, allowing for continuous benefits coverage.

Department Environment and Position Responsibilities

The Department of Psychological Science seeks a teacher-scholar with expertise in clinical psychology, community psychology, and/or health psychology. Faculty responsibilities include maintaining an active program of scholarship, teaching and advising undergraduate students, mentoring undergraduate students in research, and contributing to department and university service. Department tenure-track faculty members typically teach on a two-year 2-2-2-3 course rotation (4-unit classes) within a 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service model. This position does not include clinical training or supervision responsibilities, and clinical licensure is not required.

Successful candidates will have a record of active scholarship and demonstrate a strong commitment to mentoring undergraduate students in their program of research. We welcome applicants whose work speaks to issues of social justice and/or candidates who have an orientation towards LMU's mission, as well as sociocultural, interdisciplinary, and/or collaborative research with departmental colleagues and/or faculty from other departments at LMU.

Successful candidates will be prepared to teach a diverse undergraduate student body across a range of undergraduate courses, including general psychology, statistical methods, research methods, and specialty courses in their area of expertise. Faculty in this position will be encouraged to contribute to the LMU Core Curriculum, such as through the development of a First-Year Seminar and/or courses incorporating engaged learning pedagogies.

How To Apply

Review of application materials begins September 4, 2026, and the final deadline for submission is September 30, 2026 (11:59 PDT). Questions regarding this position can be directed to Dr. Timothy Williamson, chair of the search committee at [email protected].

  • Cover letter (not to exceed 2 pages)
  • Curriculum vitae, including education, publications with corresponding digital object identifiers (DOIs), teaching experience, and relevant leadership and service experience (e.g., academic, professional, and/or community). The curriculum vitae should clearly identify whether any courses were taught as instructor of record and indicate any undergraduate student co-authors on publications or presentations.
  • Research statement (not to exceed 3 pages), including plans for establishing a research program in your area of expertise at LMU. Please address how you plan to involve undergraduate students in that program.
  • Statement of teaching philosophy (not to exceed 3 pages), including resonance and/or alignment with LMU’s mission, a liberal arts education, the practice of Ignatian Pedagogy, and/or your overall vision for yourself as a teacher-scholar.

Across their application materials, candidates should address their commitment to and any past and/or potential contributions to advancing LMU’s mission and promoting the success, sense of belonging, and thriving of students from a variety of lived experiences. Candidates may address these commitments in relation to their scholarship, teaching, mentorship, advising, and/or service, as appropriate to their experiences and future goals. Relevant examples may include fostering inclusive and accessible learning environments, supporting equitable educational outcomes, engaging multiple perspectives and ways of knowing, mentoring students from varied backgrounds, or pursuing scholarship and service that contributes to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, justice, and/or accessibility.
