Description
Our client is a technology company solving payments problems for businesses. Their mission is to help businesses in Africa become profitable, envied, and loved. They provide a suite of products to help businesses accept payments online and offline, manage their operations, and grow their business. Our client is driven by a commitment to excellence, innovation, and customer satisfaction.
Role Overview
Our client just stood up a critical new position within the Financial Crime function: FinCrime Insights & Systems Analyst. This is a build-from-the-ground-up opportunity for someone who wants to shape how our client detects, reports on, and gets ahead of AML and fraud risk across both fiat and crypto, across every jurisdiction they operate in. You'll sit at the intersection of data, systems, and financial crime strategy. You will be a critical enabler for our client’s AML and fraud teams. The insights, tooling, and reporting you produce will directly power how they do their jobs, from investigations to decisioning to strategy. One day you’ll be with Product and Engineering scoping a new fraud signal; the next you're spotting an emerging typology before it becomes a real problem or sitting with our fraud & AML team setting up proactive rules. You'll report directly to the Technical Financial Crime Manager and have real ownership over the tools and insight that power our AML and fraud capabilities.
Job Type: Full Time/Permanent
Location: Cape Town
Workplace: Hybrid
Requirements
- Experience working within a Financial Crime function (AML, fraud, or both), ideally in fintech, payments, banking, or crypto
- Strong SQL skills comfortable independently querying, joining, and interrogating large datasets
- Hands-on experience with dashboard/BI tools (e.g. Looker, Tableau, Metabase, Power BI) to build and maintain reporting
- Familiarity with applying AI/ML tools to financial crime use cases whether that's typology detection, anomaly detection, or using AI to accelerate analysis.
- A genuine interest in how fraud and money laundering typologies evolve, particularly across fiat and crypto rails
- Comfortable operating across multiple regulatory jurisdictions, and translating regulatory reporting requirements into practical systems and workflows
- Strong cross-functional collaborator able to work fluently with engineers, product managers, and frontline AML/fraud analysts alike
- A builder's mindset: someone who sees a gap in tooling, process, or insight and wants to go fix it, not just flag it
Nice to have
- Experience with crypto/blockchain analytics tools (e.g. Chainalysis, Elliptic, TRM Labs)
- Exposure to rules-engine or case-management platforms (unit 21, Actimize, Feedzai, ComplyAdvantage, Sardine)
Responsibilities
Reporting & alerting
- Own end-to-end AML and fraud reporting framework and alerting framework across fiat and crypto, ensuring outputs are accurate, timely, and regulator-ready across all our jurisdictions. Work with our client’s AML team, fraud team and Data to define and report on their KPI’s within the respective spaces
Enabling AML & Fraud teams
- Be the critical insights engine behind our AML and fraud teams, giving them the data, dashboards, and analysis they need to investigate faster, decide with confidence, and work proactively rather than reactively
Systems & tooling
- Manage and improve the systems that power financial crime detection and response, and build new tools where gaps exist with Data, Product & Engineering
Typology intelligence
- Proactively identify and call-out emerging AML and fraud typologies, building the analytical capability to spot them earlier and faster for our AML & fraud teams
Rules engine
- Assist in managing and continuously improving our AML and fraud rules engine, tuning for both detection effectiveness and false-positive reduction
Cross-functional controls
- Partner with Product, Engineering, Data, fraud, and AML teams to design and implement proactive controls before risk materialises, not just after
Signals development
- Work with Product, Engineering, Data,AML and fraud to build and maintain the AML and fraud signals that feed our detection systems
Why join
- Direct ownership of a high-visibility function within our client’s Financial Crime team
- The chance to build systems and tooling from scratch, not inherit legacy processes
- Work across fiat and crypto, across multiple African jurisdictions, at a company processing large transaction volume
- Report directly into the Technical Financial Crime Manager, with a clear seat at the table on strategy.
