General Description (Purpose and Function):

Under the general direction of the Executive Director, Counseling Center, this position carries a full clinical caseload, provides direct clinical services to individuals and groups, including assessment and psychotherapy, emergency care and consulting services. This position meets regularly with professional colleagues to assess, diagnose, and plan treatment and disposition of cases. The person holding this position is a full-time employee of the Division of Student Affairs and is subject to the conditions of employment common to all staff members of the Division. All offices of the various divisional departments are regularly open for University-related business weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the exception of those national holidays or special occasions specified by the University’s Board of Trustees. Some evening hours may be required. The licensed therapist is expected to perform their duties conscientiously and responsibly; to adhere to high personal standards of behavior with students, colleagues, members of the University community and clients of the University; and in a manner consistent with the ethics of their own profession. This person is expected to keep themselves informed of current research and professional developments in their professional field.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Position reports to the Director, Clinical Services of the Counseling Center in matters relating to their clinical work as a licensed therapist.
  • Provides short-term individual and group psychotherapy.
  • Must be available for crisis intervention and emergency situations that may arise during regular working hours and carry a cell phone on a rotational basis to promptly respond to requests by University staff members for assistance when the Counseling Center is not regularly open.
  • Participate in the triage and crisis services of the Center as designated by the Director, Clinical Services.
  • Given the nature of triage/crisis work, there may be times when any clinical staff member may need to stay past closing time to complete paperwork, complete assessments of students seen through the triage system, and/or consult with staff members conducting risk assessments. In addition, staff may be required to provide crisis/triage coverage during the noon hour.
  • Complete records punctually according to record-keeping/report-writing procedures currently in effect at the Counseling Center and as required by legal and ethical regulations.
  • Review on a regular basis the nature and status of individual caseloads with the Director, Clinical Services or the Executive Director.
  • Consult with the Director, Clinical Services or Executive Director regarding clients who are suicidal, homicidal, severely depressed, anxious, acting out or showing a high probability of acting out, psychotic or borderline psychotic, manifesting a high degree of psychopathology, or expressing such extreme problems in living that good clinical judgment would dictate initiating the supervisory process.
  • Preserve the confidentiality and trust of clients while also promoting the best interests of the University and adhering to its recognized rules of procedure. Whenever ethically and legally permissible and in the best interests of the client or the University, cooperate with other appropriate University staff in cases or issues of mutual concern.
  • Submit all service reports or other communications involving the clinical operations of the Counseling Center that are intended for persons, departments, or agencies outside the Counseling Center for review and approval by the Director, Clinical Services or Executive Director before transmitting them.
  • All Counseling Center clinical staff are required to participate in educational, outreach, and prevention programs originating from the Center. This may take the form of developing such programs or accepting assignments to supervise or participate in them. Clinical staff are required to regularly consult with and keep the Associate Director for Outreach, Director, or appropriate Associate Director informed about their participation in such activities. The person holding this position is expected to lead a minimum of two such programs each semester. These programs include activities originating from and under the supervision of the Counseling Center’s Associate Director for Outreach or staff who intend to bring the Center’s services and the skills of the professional staff to members of the student body and the University community. Evening and weekend outreach events may be required.
  • Potentially supervise interns in the APA-accredited Doctoral Internship Program in Professional Psychology and graduate students assigned to the Counseling Center for training in the fields of Clinical and Counseling Psychology.
  • Participate annually in at least two Student Affairs social activities (e.g., graduation ceremony, staff development breakfast, Laurel Awards, etc.).
