Senior Systems Engineer – Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure

Copart is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer with 7 to 10 years of experience in design, build, automate, and operate our hybrid cloud infrastructure. This role is for a highly experienced individual contributor who brings strong technical judgment, leads complex initiatives end‑to‑end, and serves as a technical mentor and escalation point for the Systems Engineering team.

The ideal candidate has extensive Linux and infrastructure experience, a passion for automation, and the ability to translate business and platform needs into resilient, scalable, and supportable systems.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Engineering

• Serve as a senior technical contributor responsible for designing, building, and operating Copart’s Linux and hybrid infrastructure platforms.

• Lead the architecture and implementation of highly available, resilient, and disaster‑recoverable systems.

• Take ownership of complex infrastructure initiatives, from design through production rollout and operational handoff.

• Act as a technical escalation point for challenging system and performance issues.

Linux & Infrastructure Operations

• Provide hands‑on engineering expertise to build, manage, and troubleshoot large‑scale Linux environments.

• Support and integrate enterprise storage, virtualization, and cloud platforms across Copart environments.

• Participate in and help improve 24x7 on‑call operations, driving reliability and response excellence.

• Perform deep incident analysis, lead root‑cause investigations, and deliver corrective and preventative actions.

Automation & Reliability

• Design, build, and maintain automation solutions to reduce operational toil and improve consistency.

• Develop and support infrastructure‑as‑code and configuration management practices.

• Create and maintain Ansible playbooks, scripts, and tooling to enable scalable operations.

• Champion best practices around system hardening, patching, and operational readiness.

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

• Develop and maintain high‑quality documentation, diagrams, and runbooks.

• Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and design discussions.

• Share best practices and emerging technologies across the broader engineering organization.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with Network Engineering, DevOps, Security, and Development teams on shared initiatives.

• Translate application and business requirements into reliable infrastructure solutions.

• Provide technical input to architecture reviews, capacity planning, and platform roadmap discussions.

Required Skills & Experience

• Strong, hands‑on expertise in Linux systems engineering, including administration, tuning, and troubleshooting:

    • Ubuntu

    • RHEL / CentOS / Rocky Linux

• Advanced understanding of networking concepts, including:

    • OSI model

    • Routing and NAT

    • DNS, SMTP, HTTP/HTTPS

    • SSH, LDAP

• Strong experience with automation and scripting, including Python and Bash.

• Proven experience creating and maintaining Ansible playbooks in production environments.

• Proficiency using GitHub for version control, collaboration, and deployment workflows.

• Experience operating in mission‑critical, 24x7 production environments.

Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have Skills

• Experience supporting and securing public cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure).

• Hands‑on experience with VMware vSphere/Nutanix or similar virtualization platforms.

• Experience supporting SAN and enterprise storage systems.

• Familiarity with configuration management tools such as:

    • Puppet

    • SaltStack

    • Chef

• Experience building and supporting Docker containers.

• Infrastructure provisioning and orchestration using Terraform.
