The Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising police officers while maintaining public order and protecting life and property by responding to emergencies, investigating crimes, apprehending criminals and deterring criminal activity in a manner that will foster public confidence and respect. Additionally, they engage directly with the community to build positive relationships, address concerns, and implement proactive strategies to prevent crime.

Salary Range: $51.80/hour - $69.72/hour (Step 1 - Step 12)

SCHEDULES AND OTHER CONDITIONS
The position is regularly scheduled to work rotating twelve (12) hour shifts, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Shift assignments and work hours may vary based on operational needs. The position may require additional hours, including extended shifts, overtime, or emergency call-ins, and may be required to respond to significant or time-sensitive incidents outside of regularly scheduled hours. The sergeant assigned to investigations will primarily work a forty (40) hour workweek subject to change based on operational needs.

  • Directly supervises assigned personnel and conducts annual performance evaluations and supports officer development.
  • Coordinate work assignments and direction as appropriate based on assignment.
  • Represent the Police Department when interacting with local schools, other government agencies, and community members regarding patrol operations, public safety initiatives, and related investigations. 
  • Assist with managing and reviewing case reports, investigative files, and related documentation for quality, completeness, and prosecutorial readiness.
  • Provide credible testimony and/or evidence at trials, hearings, and before grand juries, as required.
  • Manage a caseload and investigate all levels of crime to identify facts in a case to prove or disprove who is responsible for committing crimes.
  • Provide leadership and direction to staff.
  • Respond to emergencies and other calls for services to protect life and property, prevent crime, and enforce laws.
  • Formulate reports based on evidence and facts established in a case and recommend criminal charges to attorneys as necessary.
  • Develop and implement split second decisions aligned with police department policies and POST Board requirements by utilizing trained tactics to control dangerous, unpredictable, and hazardous situations.
  • Analyze crime and call for service data and initiate staffing allocations and techniques that will have the maximum impact on reducing criminal activity and increasing public safety.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies, attorneys, judges and others to prosecute crimes.
  • Effectively communicate with a diverse range of community members, support community engagement, and work to positively strengthen relationships between the police department and the community.
  • Participate in department training (i.e. use of force, firearms, drone operations, etc.).
  • Assist other City departments and employees as necessary. 
  • Regularly participates in public education demonstrations, exhibitions, presentations and a variety of community events. 
  • Possess effective communication, organizational, and general presentation skills.
  • Perform other position-related duties as required or assigned.

  • Fosters a team environment amongst assigned shift members, other City departments and neighboring law enforcement agencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community policing principles.

Minimum (all):
  1. Associate's degree in law enforcement or related field.
  2. Three (3) or more years' experience as a licensed peace officer.
  3. Active Minnesota POST Board certification with current training record.
  4. A valid MN Class D driver's license and driving record that meets City and/or department standards.

Equivalency Statement: An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Skills and Experience That Elevate your Success (Not required):
  1. Bachelor's degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, emergency management or related field.
  2. Five (5) or more years' experience as a license peace officer.
  3. Ability to communicate fluently and effectively in one or more languages, in addition to English.

Physical Demands
Administrative and command duties involve extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, computer use, meetings, and other routine office activities. The position requires repetitive hand and wrist movements associated with keyboarding, computer use, and other office tasks. 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to walk, run, climb stairs or other obstacles, bend, kneel, reach, and maintain various physical positions for extended periods. 

The position requires the ability to regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds. When operationally necessary, the position may also require occasional lifting, carrying, or dragging of heavier objects exceeding 100 pounds.

Vision
The position requires sufficient visual acuity to perform essential duties, including close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception, the ability to distinguish colors, and the ability to adjust focus.

Hearing
Requires the ability to hear and distinguish verbal communications, radio transmissions, alarms, sirens, and other auditory signals, including environments with elevated or sudden noise levels. The position may involve exposure to loud noises associated with firearms, emergency vehicles, and other law enforcement activities.

Cognitive Demands
The position requires the ability to exercise sound judgment; analyze information; make timely and effective decisions; maintain situational awareness; communicate clearly and effectively; manage competing priorities; and respond appropriately to routine, emergency, and rapidly changing situations. The position requires the ability to remain attentive and focused for extended periods and to effectively perform duties under stressful or high-pressure conditions.

Environmental Conditions
Field and operational duties may be performed in a variety of environments and may include driving or riding in department vehicles, working outdoors in varying weather conditions, responding to emergency and non-emergency incidents, and providing command or supervisory oversight at active scenes. Depending on assignment and operational needs, frequent driving or riding in a police vehicle and occasional work outside of normal office environments may be required.

The position may involve exposure to potentially hazardous or stressful conditions, including blood and bodily fluids, injuries, traffic crashes, hazardous environments, emotionally distressing or traumatic situations, and individuals who may be angry, combative, or violent. The position requires the employee to carry and use a department-issued firearm, wear a duty belt or load bearing vest as appropriate, operate department vehicles using defensive-driving techniques, and respond appropriately to potentially dangerous situations.
