Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
This position provides locksmithing services and maintains the master key system for a major facility. The Locksmith II performs advanced journey-level locksmithing duties, including the installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of mechanical and electronic locking systems. The position also provides technical assistance, work direction, training, and coordination of locksmithing activities as assigned.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under general supervision, responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Maintain and manage the master key system for a major facility.
- Develop and maintain keying schedules and records of keys issued.
- Meet with agency personnel to determine keying and access-control requirements.
- Update master key systems as offices, buildings, and locksets are modified or remodeled.
- Install, maintain, repair, and modify a variety of locking devices and systems, including:
- Bored cylinder locks
- Tumbler locks
- Electronic and magnetic locks
- Pushbutton combination locks
- High-security locking systems
- Panic exit devices
- Cabinet and desk locks
- Door and lock alarm sensors
- Padlocks
- Inspect, clean, adjust, lubricate, repair, and replace locks, door closers, alarm sensors, and related door hardware.
- Repin locks, assign appropriate pin codes, cut keys, and change keyways as needed.
- Open and repair vaults and money safes.
- Unlock vehicles and file cabinets and originate replacement keys.
- Duplicate keys by code or using key-duplicating equipment.
- Develop specifications for construction and remodeling projects involving locking systems.
- Ensure locking systems and related materials comply with applicable ADA requirements, building codes, and other regulations.
- Estimate, order, and maintain inventory of replacement locksets, equipment, and other materials.
- Provide technical assistance regarding current and future locking-system needs and requirements.
- Design and implement locking systems appropriate to facility needs and security requirements.
- Provide work direction, training, and technical assistance to lower-level locksmiths or assigned personnel.
- Assign and review work and provide input regarding employee performance, as applicable.
- Plan and coordinate major locksmithing projects and work assignments.
- May develop, manage, and administer automated key-dispensing systems, including installation, programming, and operation.
- Coordinate with vendors, management information systems, agency management, and other staff as necessary.
- In correctional environments, may provide work direction to inmate crews and implement applicable safety and security procedures.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
Knowledge of:
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
- Applicable building codes and other requirements.
- Electronic and automated locking devices and systems.
- Workplace safety rules and regulations.
- Principles and practices of training and work direction.
- Agency policies and procedures related to security and key control.
- Policies and procedures related to access to facilities and equipment.
- Methods, materials, tools, and machinery used in locksmithing.
- Operation and components of cylinder, tumbler, electronic, magnetic, safe, vehicle, and pushbutton combination locks.
Ability to:
- Determine the locking system best suited to the needs of the agency and intended use of the facility.
- Design and install locking mechanisms and systems in complex facilities.
- Estimate and order materials and equipment necessary for work unit operations.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of replacement locksets and equipment.
- Organize and coordinate the work of others.
- Plan and organize major projects and delegate work assignments.
- Prepare documentation regarding the performance of assigned personnel.
- Provide training, work direction, and technical assistance.
- Supervise and direct assigned personnel or inmate crews, as applicable.
- Implement and enforce appropriate safety, security, and custodial measures in a correctional environment.
- Maintain the security and integrity of locking systems.
- Work independently and exercise appropriate judgment in performing assigned duties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of a recognized locksmith apprenticeship program followed by one (1) year of journey level locksmithing experience;
- OR one (1) year of experience as a Locksmith I in Nevada State service;
- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
WORK SCHEDULE AND EXPECTATIONS:
- Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM (PT).
SALARY:
Grade 31 (CBA A, E, F), Step 1: $57,127.68
*This position is contingent upon ongoing and available funding.
Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
