Engineering Services has an outstanding opportunity for an Engineering Manager to join their team.

 

About this Opportunity

The purpose of this position is to provide leadership and oversight to a staff of an architect and data analyst as well as civil, electrical, and environmental professional engineers to support the University of Washington Seattle campus that is comprised of over 300 buildings and 15 million gross square feet. This includes a major Medical Center/teaching hospital, state of the art research facilities, classrooms, offices, sport and recreation facilities, utility distribution systems, 16 miles of utility tunnels and a central power plant. Additional support is provided to other campuses and facilities that are comprised of over 230 buildings and 4.5 million gross square feet including the University of Washington Tacoma and Bothell campuses, Pack Forest, Forks, Sand Point, Friday Harbor and the UW Tower complex. Consulting services are also provided to King County in support of the Harborview Medical Center Bond Project.

The leadership that this position provides will be critical to not only meeting the UW’s Sustainability Action Plan goals, but also the UWF’s strategic goals across the board (i.e. Leveraging Facts and Data, Preventative Maintenance, utility capitalization, etc.).

 

This role is based at UW Tower at the UW Seattle Campus. Hybrid work schedule with eligibility for telework.

 

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership, Personnel Management, and Resource Stewardship (40%)

  • Provide leadership, strategic planning, and personnel management for the architectural, civil, electrical, and environmental engineering disciplines; manage consultant resources; establish priorities and performance expectations; and oversee engineering service delivery, expenditures, and revenues.

Campus Operations, Maintenance, and Infrastructure Reliability (25%)

  • Direct engineering support for campus operations and maintenance; provide solutions to operational and maintenance issues; identify opportunities for life-cycle cost optimization and operational efficiency; coordinate facility and utility renewal efforts; support utility and power plant operations; and oversee engineering accountability programs.

Capital Projects, Engineering Design, and Project Delivery (10%)

  • Manage engineering support through all phases of capital projects; oversee project assignments, design reviews, construction quality, and turnover activities; conduct engineering audits, studies, and assessments; develop technical recommendations; and implement building and utility renewal projects, including projects exceeding $100 million.

Infrastructure Planning and Utility Strategy (10%)

  • Serve as the University's senior technical authority for architectural, civil, electrical, and environmental engineering matters; oversee utility infrastructure assessments and master planning efforts; support infrastructure renewal, expansion, and utility upgrades; and advise on sustainability, engineering best practices, and long-range infrastructure investment strategies.

Standards, Environmental Compliance, and Regulatory Leadership (10%)

  • Manage Facilities Design Standards; ensure design consistency, maintainability, and operational efficiency; oversee environmental and civil compliance programs; provide guidance on codes, permits, and regulatory requirements; and monitor emerging legislative and regulatory impacts on University facilities and infrastructure.

Miscellaneous and Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

  • This position manages approximately 6 employees and an engineering intern program.
  • This position performs essential services and may be required to work during any period of declared suspended operation.

 

Required Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity your application must demonstrate you meet both the minimum qualifications and additional qualifications listed below:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical, civil, structural, or related engineering field
  • 8 years of experience in engineering, construction, facilities management or a related field to include progressively responsible leadership experience
  • Proficient and comfortable with technology-based project management systems and software such as MS Office (MS Project, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.), Bluebeam, CMMSS
  • Proven leadership skills and experience motivating a team while holding managers accountable.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Washington.
  • Broad construction management/project management experience and/or certification as a Project Management Professional.
  • LEED AP or other related certifications.
  • Experience with institutional/governmental/public works projects and facilities management.
  • Experience in providing utility services to large research institution and medical facilities.

 

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in mechanical/electrical spaces, utility tunnels, outdoors, confined spaces, around operating equipment such as boilers, pumps and transformers, and on active construction sites.
  • While usual hours fall within standard business hours, work may be required during hours beyond standard business hours including weekends. 
  • Position requires flexibility to deal with emergency situations, meetings, or other scheduled work that may fall outside normal work hours.
  • Must be able to move/lift 50 pounds.
  • Professional travel may be required.
  • Must have a valid Washington Driver License.
  • Must be able to work in non-smoking environment.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.

 

About the Team
UW Facilities (UWF) manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure, and land with more than 1,000 employees in a variety of fields. Organizationally, UWF consists of five units: the Operations group includes, Maintenance & Construction (buildings and grounds), Building Services (custodial and waste management/ recycling), Transportation Services, and Regulated Materials delivering services primarily on the Seattle Campus; the Asset Management group includes Project Delivery Group (PDG), Engineering Services, Campus Architecture and Planning, and Sustainability throughout the UW enterprise; the Campus Utilities & Operation, Human Resources, Finance, Business Intelligence & Information Technology group, Communications, and Safety report directly to the head of Facilities. Please visit the UW Facilities web page for more information: https://facilities.uw.edu/. 

Engineering Services is a team of engineers, architects, drafters, engineering assistants, and records staff that is responsible for all UW Facilities information and design standards.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$150,000.00 annual

Pay Range Maximum:

$161,496.00 annual
