Overview
The Supervisor will lead sales and use tax refund engagements for multiple corporate clients, primarily in manufacturing, across any U.S. state. Our Indirect Tax practice is growing, and this role is designed for an experienced refund professional who can own engagements and represent claims with states. This role does not include direct reports; people management at our firm begins at the Manager level. It offers a clear path to Manager, a highly automated work environment, and no traditional busy season.
Responsibilities:
- Administer and oversee sales and use tax refund engagements for multiple clients at once, often with dozens of active claims per client, and play a key role in department practices.
- Coordinate all aspects of day-to-day reverse audit support, including invoice review, sales tax issue identification, preparation of exemption arguments, and gathering and preparing supporting documents.
- Collaborate with the team and multiple clients to support reverse audit claims with both states and vendors.
- Use prior experience, tax expertise, and advanced working knowledge of tax research tools to draft taxability answers, prepare taxability matrices, and prepare and review refund claims in any state.
- Oversee the extraction of data from client ERP systems and the gathering, organization, and interpretation of data to prepare refund claims.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, maintaining strong relationships, requesting data and documentation, responding to requests, and keeping engagements moving forward.
- Communicate directly with state auditors and attend and field all state hearings and vendor calls to move each refund claim to closure.
- Track and adhere to all state-required filing deadlines to maintain statute, and prepare and file claims to additional appeal levels as necessary.
- Resolve complex refund issues with a high degree of independence.
- Develop a working knowledge of Alteryx, an analytical tool the team uses to automate manual data processes for tax purposes.
Note: This list is not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other similar tasks and duties as assigned may be expected in addition to this list.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of 4 years of sales and use tax experience in a corporate or professional services environment
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience preparing sales and use tax refund or reverse audit claims
- Experience communicating directly with state auditors and clients on refund claims
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite software
- Ability to manage high volume across multiple clients and deadlines
- Impeccable organization skills and attention to detail
- Impeccable communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work with others effectively and demonstrate professionalism when interacting with clients
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred
- Consulting or professional services experience preferred
- Experience with state appeals or hearings preferred
- Experience with data automation or AI tools, a plus
- CPA not required
- Refund experience in a single state is welcome; mechanics carry across states
Work Authorization:
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. This position is not eligible for employer sponsorship of an employment visa, now or in the future, including H-1B sponsorship or transfer.
