The Customer Insights and Analytics (CIA) organization is Lilly's business-facing insight and analytics capability, uniting Market Research and Analytics into a single, integrated partnership model that helps our business partners make faster, better, more customer-centered decisions.
Position Overview
The Senior Director, Consumer Market Research is the lead of consumer and DTC market research for launched products, within CIA's Consumer & Media Integrated Insights team. The role owns the deep consumer insights and research that show how launched brands across the portfolio reach, persuade, and serve patients and consumers — creative and campaign development and testing, message refresh and DTC claims, consumer and patient experience, and social listening. This is a function-based role, not a therapeutic-area one.
Consumer & Media uses an analytics-led model. Consumer & Media analytics owns the business relationship — the single point of contact for consumer and DTC marketing — and answers how much and where through media and marketing measurement (cross-media, brand lift, marketing-mix modeling) and campaign performance. Consumer Market Research does not own the relationship; it augments the analytics with the deep consumer “why” and the primary research the business needs. Analytics identifies what is happening in-market; consumer research explains why it lands and what will move it — together one connected point of view.
Consumer & Media takes over from the therapeutic area Strategic Intelligence teams on the US direct-to-consumer side when a product launches. The SI teams own the pre-launch strategic consumer work — market and customer understanding, target patient, and positioning. Once positioning and target patient are set and a brand goes to market, this work owns the in-market consumer research for that brand — including launched-brand DTC creative and campaign research (even where that creative began as innovation-readiness work), which sits in Consumer & Media rather than with the pre-launch teams.
Consumer Market Research owns the framing, judgment, and interpretation of this work; scale, standards, and execution are drawn from the center. The standardized consumer brand-health and continuous trackers are run by the MR Center of Excellence (this role interprets them for launched brands rather than running them); methods, panels, and fielding are drawn from the MR Center of Excellence and executed through external vendors, the shared LBI market-research pool, and AI tools.
The Senior Director, Consumer Market Research reports to the Associate Vice President, Consumer & Media Integrated Insights and partners closely, in a matrixed model, with the Consumer & Media analytics lead (a peer who owns the business relationship), the therapeutic areas' Strategic Intelligence teams, and CIA's centralized capability teams — the MR Center of Excellence, AI Products, and Data Science.
Responsibilities
Owning Consumer / DTC Market Research — the Deep Insight
● Own consumer / DTC research for launched brands across the portfolio — creative, copy, and concept testing (including pool-out and optimization), campaign development and evolution, message refresh, and DTC claims testing.
● Own consumer and patient experience research for launched brands — users / non-users, experience and journey research, patient-support and community research, and NPS / reputation — and consumer social listening for launched brands.
● Own launched-brand DTC creative and campaign research — including creative for launched brands that began as innovation-readiness work — and cross-brand and masterbrand consumer campaign research.
Partnership with Analytics & the Business
● Partner with the Consumer & Media analytics lead, who owns the business relationship: augment the analytics with the deep consumer “why” and the primary research the business needs, form time-boxed teams around the decisions that matter, and reconcile where research and measurement agree, conflict, or need triangulation before they reach senior stakeholders.
● Bring the voice of the consumer and patient into consumer and DTC marketing strategy through the analytics partnership — as a driver of patient reach and better patient outcomes.
The Handoff from Strategic Intelligence & the Center of Excellence
● Pick up each brand from the therapeutic area Strategic Intelligence team once positioning and target patient are complete, so the pre-launch strategy carries cleanly into in-market research; keep a clean seam — SI owns pre-launch strategic consumer work, Consumer & Media owns post-launch, in-market consumer / DTC research.
● Interpret the consumer brand-health and campaign trackers — run centrally by the MR Center of Excellence — for launched brands, and draw on the Center of Excellence for research methods, quality standards, vendor and panel governance, and specialized techniques, working with external vendors and the shared LBI pool within that governance.
Team Leadership
● Set clear expectations and participate in budget ownership at the team level — managing the prioritization and allocation of people, time, and research spend across the consumer-research agenda — within the overall budget owned by the Associate Vice President, Consumer & Media Integrated Insights.
● Coach and develop the consumer market-research team, including in matrixed relationships without direct reporting authority, and take accountability for developing talent that advances into broader business or CIA leadership roles.
● Model and reinforce a “one team” culture across consumer research, media measurement, and analytics, reducing duplication of effort and competition for business attention.
● Hold the team accountable for operating in new, optimized ways aligned with CIA's agentic strategy.
AI-Enabled Ways of Working
● Work AI-first by default — apply synthetic and AI-enabled methods (e.g., synthetic respondents, AI creative pre-testing) to accelerate early-stage, exploratory, and standard research, reserving human-led primary research for the highest-stakes decisions and applying human-in-the-loop validation.
● Serve as the craft steward for consumer / DTC research methods and quality, and represent consumer-research needs in shaping CIA's broader AI/agentic roadmap.
Basic Qualifications
● Bachelor's degree.
● Minimum of 5 years of experience in market research or a related insight-generating function
Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role, including but not limited to F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, F-1 STEM OPT, J-1, H-1B, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, or L-1
Additional Skills / Preferences
● MBA, Master of Marketing Research, or other advanced degree a plus.
● Ability to influence senior individuals and teams without direct authority, and to navigate ambiguity and complex, matrixed stakeholder landscapes.
● Deep consumer / DTC and creative-testing expertise; experience with brand-health tracking, media measurement, and campaign performance, with working fluency in analytics and media measurement.
● Demonstrated experience partnering with analytics or measurement teams to bring research and measurement together into one point of view, including in a model where the role augments rather than owns the stakeholder relationship.
● Experience applying AI tools within consumer research (synthetic respondents, AI creative pre-testing, automated analysis, agentic approaches).
● Experience supporting product launches and the in-market strategy that follows; relevant therapeutic area experience a plus.
● Familiarity with DTC / consumer marketing, omnichannel, and media, and with regulatory (MLR) constraints on consumer-facing researchAdditional Information
● 5 – 20% travel depending on business need.
● Lilly may provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role for internal applicants only
