Overview

A warm and highly communicative family in Brooklyn Heights is seeking an experienced, calm, and engaging nanny/family assistant for their daughter, who will turn 2 at the end of October. The anticipated start date is November 2, 2026.

The child will attend a nearby pre-K program Monday through Thursday from 8:30am–12:15pm. The nanny will arrive at 11am, begin the day by walking the family’s friendly 12-pound poodle mix, and then walk to the child’s school for pickup. The remainder of the day will consist of full-charge childcare, including nap-time, lunch, activities, outings, and age-appropriate care. One parent will be in and out of the home throughout the day, while the other works outside of the home, so the ideal candidate should be comfortable working collaboratively while also confidently taking full charge.

The family is seeking someone who brings calm, confident competence to the role and genuinely enjoys helping young children discover the world. The ideal candidate will notice and foster the child’s individual interests, provide patient and emotionally supportive care, and be affectionate and comforting when needed. The family is organized, punctual, calendar-driven, and highly communicative and would value a nanny who shares those qualities.

The current schedule will be Sunday through Thursday, totaling 38 guaranteed hours per week:

• Sunday: 12pm–6pm
• Monday through Wednesday: 11am–6pm
• Thursday: 11am–10pm
• Friday and Saturday: Off

Thursday will serve as the family’s regularly scheduled evening for work dinners, date nights, or other commitments. Someone who is open/flexible to additional date nights would be welcome. The family expects to relocate from Brooklyn Heights to Manhattan around July 1 2027. At that time, the role will likely transition to a more traditional Monday through Friday, approximately 9am–5pm summer schedule. The child will return to a half-day school schedule in the fall, at which point the family and nanny can collaboratively determine the schedule that best supports both the child’s needs and the nanny’s preferences. The family would ideally like to find a long-term candidate who is comfortable with these anticipated changes.

Responsibilities

• Provide attentive, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate care for one child, who will be 2 years old at the start of the position
• Walk to the child’s nearby pre-K program for pickup at 12:15pm, Monday through Thursday
• Prepare and serve the child’s lunch, snacks, and other simple meals as needed
• Maintain age-appropriate routines and support the child’s overall physical, emotional, and social development
• Plan and facilitate engaging activities, classes, playdates, playground visits, neighborhood outings, and other enriching experiences
• Observe and encourage the child’s individual interests, curiosity, confidence, and independence
• Provide a calm, affectionate, and emotionally supportive presence, including offering comfort and physical affection when the child needs reassurance
• Maintain the child’s spaces, belongings, and supplies in an organized manner
• Handle the child’s laundry and keep child-related areas tidy
• Assist with the family’s laundry approximately once per week (washing, drying, folding)
• Walk the family’s friendly 12-pound poodle mix upon arrival at 11am, Monday through Thursday
• Provide light, collaborative kitchen assistance, particularly between approximately 5pm and 6pm on Monday through Wednesday, alongside toddler and parent
• Assist with simple tasks such as chopping ingredients, cooking alongside the child and parent, loading or unloading the dishwasher, and helping with kitchen cleanup; however the nanny will not be responsible for meal planning, grocery shopping, or independently preparing full family meals
• Communicate openly and proactively with the parents regarding the child’s schedule, activities, development, and any household needs related to the role
• Coordinate with the family’s cleaners and work collaboratively within the household
• Accompany the family on occasional domestic travel, including spending approximately one to two weeks in Maine during August; occasional international travel may arise in the future
• Remain flexible as the family relocates to Manhattan (UWS or UES) and the schedule evolves beginning in July 2027

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of professional nanny experience, with strong experience caring for toddlers and preschool-aged children
• Calm, confident, capable, and emotionally attuned caregiving style
• Warm, nurturing, affectionate, patient, and genuinely enthusiastic about working with young children
• Knowledge of age-appropriate development, activities, routines, and positive guidance
• Proactive and observant, with the ability to recognize and foster a child’s interests
• Highly communicative, punctual, reliable, organized, and comfortable working with a calendar-driven family
• Confident working independently in a full-charge capacity while also collaborating with a parent who may be in and out of the home
• Comfortable assisting with light family-assistant duties while keeping childcare as the primary focus
• Comfortable working in a home with a small dog and responsible for a brief daily dog walk
• Flexible and willing to adapt as the family’s location and scheduling needs evolve
• Professional, discreet, and able to provide excellent references from previous private-family employers

Requirements

• United States work authorization
• Ability to commit to the Sunday through Thursday schedule, including the extended Thursday evening
• Willingness to travel domestically on occasion and to spend all or part of the family’s annual August stay in Maine
• Valid passport or willingness to obtain one is preferred
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record are preferred but not required
• Ability to swim and supervise a child safely around water is preferred but not required
• Ability to make a long-term commitment and transition with the family from Brooklyn Heights to Manhattan (UWS or UES) is strongly preferred

Salary and Benefits

• $40–$45 per hour, depending on experience
