About Seattle Center and Waterfront Park:

Seattle Center is the regions premier civic, arts, and family gathering place in the core of our city and region, home to more than 30 arts, cultural, and entertainment organizations, family attractions, and tourist amenities.

In 2025, Seattle Center expanded its role to provide operations, maintenance, and public safety services to Seattle’s new Waterfront Park, a series of new public spaces on Seattle’s downtown waterfront between Pioneer Square and Pier 62.

About this position:

Seattle Center’s is seeking skilled professionals to join our team of laborers at Waterfront Park. The Utility Laborer works in the park with the Waterfront Operations team and will report to the Waterfront Grounds Maintenance Crew Chief.

The Utility Laborer is responsible for leading small crews in routine maintenance of cleaning park instillations and grounds. Utility laborers may be scheduled to work weekends, evenings, and/or holidays as part of our regular business operations.

The Utility Laborer shift will be Sunday-Thursday 6:00 am-2:30 pm from May through September and 7:00 am-3:30 pm October through April.

Here is more of what you will be doing:

  • Lead laborers and small crews in completing assigned work.  
  • Organize work assignments, solve problems and interact with internal and external clients while managing competing deadlines.   
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of instillations, grounds, and facilities during and after events. 
  • Assist Trades personnel in the execution of their work as requested and assigned.  
  • Transport materials, equipment and supplies using a variety of motorized vehicles which may include pick-ups, medium duty trucks, scissor lifts and forklifts.  
  • Use mechanical equipment such as a backpack blower, pressure washer, and floor scrubber.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six months of experience performing general laboring/manual work, good physical condition, and the ability to work with hand and power tools is required.

License, Certification, and Other Requirements: 

  • Current State of Washington driver license and good driving record
  • Forklift operator certification or ability to obtain within 90 days.  

You will be ready to take on this role if you have:

  • Experience working in a public facing facility or park.
  • Experience with small hand and power tools, backpack blowers, pressure washers, scissor lifts, power scrubbers and floor cleaning and finish machines. 
  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  
  • Experience organizing work, solving medium to complex problems and managing competing and inflexible deadlines.  
  • Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets.   
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work within a diverse workforce and be effective in a team setting or alone after being given oral or written instructions.  
  • Superior knowledge in all aspects of cleaning buildings, grounds and facilities.
  • Experience using an electronic work order and/or asset management system in your daily work. 


Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • The Utility Laborer shift will be Sunday-Thursday 6am-2:30pm from May through September and 7am-3:30pm October through April.
  • Willing and able to lift 50 pounds or more on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to stand, walk or bend for extended periods of time.  
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather, with demonstrated ability to organize work and meet tight deadlines. 
  • Work shifts are assigned with the possibility of multiple start times during the work week. 

This position is classified as a Utility Laborer.

The full pay range for this step-progression position is $34.32 per hour. New employees begin at Step 1 (there is only one step) of the pay progression, which is $34.32 hourly. Current City employees’ starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.

Driving Record - If you are selected to advance in this hiring process, you may be asked to obtain a complete 5 Year driving record from the Department of Licensing.  

Pre-Employment Physical - Due to the tasks associated with this role, you will be required to successfully pass a preemployment physical.

Individuals selected to fill this position may be eligible to receive Language Premium Pay (SMC 4.20.360), which provides a $200.00 monthly stipend to qualified bilingual employees who are properly evaluated and assigned to provide direct communication in-language, interpretation, or translation services to the public on behalf of the City of Seattle.
