Description
- Docketing new appeals, issuing acknowledgment orders, identifying legal issues, preparing cases for hearing, including writing synopses of issues and noting case file deficiencies, researching legal issues, assisting at teleconferences and hearings. Initiates inquiries regarding case processing and responds to appeal inquiries on behalf of the Administrative Judge (AJ) of the office.
- Performs legal research, analyzing legal decisions, opinions, rulings, and other issues affecting appeals. Performs research from reference sources including various United States Code, Code of Federal Regulations, Westlaw, and Board decisions.
- Assist with responding to oral and written requests from Board offices, Congressional offices, the public, appellants, and their representatives, concerning potential, pending and past appeals and general Board procedures. Analyzes and evaluates initial appeals, determines timeless and jurisdictional issues and hearing requirements. Works closely to assist the Supervisory Paralegal Specialist, Regional Director, and AJs in docketing appeals, issuing orders, proofreading decisions, and issuing decisions. Technical skill is required with legal case management systems to enter data into an electronic appeal system.
- Receive incoming telephone calls and visitors, determine the nature of business, and tactfully refer calls to the appropriate staff Assists with receipt and distribution of incoming appeals, and inquiries for the agency. Is able to create, bookmark, and organize electronic case files. Typing is done consistently on a computer. Uses a variety of office equipment in conducting the work of the office, including but not limited to computers, printers, copy machine, mail equipment, scanner, etc.
- Qualifications/Experience. The contractor must provide personnel with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the required services.
Required Qualifications:
- At least two years of experience providing paralegal, legal support, litigation support, or adjudicatory support services;
- Knowledge of legal terminology, legal document formats, and case file organization;
- Ability to conduct basic legal and factual research;
- Ability to prepare clear, organized summaries and draft documents;
- Strong attention to detail;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Acrobat, and electronic document management systems;
- Ability to handle sensitive, confidential, and personal identifiable information;
- Strong written and oral communication skills;
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments.
- Paralegal certificate or degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience supporting federal agencies, courts, administrative tribunals, inspectors general, or legal offices.
