*At Securian, the internal job title is Product Owner Consultant*

Position Summary

Help shape the future of ServiceNow as an enterprise platform.

Securian is looking for a ServiceNow Platform Product Owner who can connect established enterprise strategy with platform execution. You will work across business and technology organizations to identify where ServiceNow can create the greatest value, build a transparent product roadmap, prioritize ServiceNow demand within established enterprise priorities, and guide an agile platform team toward measurable outcomes.

The ServiceNow Platform Product Owner is responsible for maximizing the business and technology value of Securian's enterprise ServiceNow platform. This role owns the ServiceNow product vision, roadmap, and backlog within established enterprise strategy, capability priorities, governance standards, and investment guardrails. The Product Owner translates stakeholder needs and approved priorities into executable work and makes product-level prioritization decisions that balance business value, user experience, platform health, risk, scalability, and long-term sustainability.

Working closely with business leaders, the IT Services Manager, ServiceNow platform engineering, architecture, IT service management, governance, and Enterprise Technology partners, the Product Owner will shape product demand, define measurable product outcomes, and ensure ServiceNow capabilities are delivered in alignment with established enterprise strategy and platform standards. The role serves as the primary bridge between strategic direction and the agile delivery team, ensuring the team is solving the highest-value problems rather than simply delivering requested features.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means Securian has a clear and transparent ServiceNow product roadmap aligned to established enterprise priorities; roadmap and backlog decisions maximize measurable value within approved capacity and investment guardrails; stakeholders understand what the platform team is delivering and why; platform capabilities are adopted and achieve intended product outcomes; and the platform remains scalable, reliable, maintainable, and positioned for future growth.

Role Scope & Decision Rights

The Product Owner is accountable for the ServiceNow product vision, roadmap, backlog, product-level prioritization, and product outcomes within the strategic direction and guardrails established by the IT Services Manager and appropriate enterprise leadership. The role informs and recommends, but does not own, enterprise IT Services strategy, enterprise capability governance, or enterprise investment decisions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Platform Product Strategy & Roadmap

  • Own and continuously evolve the ServiceNow product vision and multi-quarter roadmap within established enterprise strategy, capability priorities, governance standards, and investment guardrails.

  • Translate established enterprise strategies, capability priorities, and desired business outcomes into product themes, roadmap sequencing, epics, features, and actionable delivery priorities; provide evidence-based recommendations to inform investment decisions.

  • Evaluate new and existing ServiceNow capabilities and recommend where the platform should invest, enhance, standardize, simplify, or retire capabilities based on value, strategic alignment, platform health, and stakeholder needs.

  • Balance strategic initiatives, operational needs, regulatory requirements, technical debt, lifecycle needs, and platform modernization in roadmap decisions.

Enterprise Demand & Prioritization

  • Apply established enterprise demand governance and prioritization criteria to evaluate ServiceNow requests based on business value, strategic alignment, customer impact, risk, cost, capacity, and implementation complexity.

  • Facilitate prioritization and trade-off decisions when demand exceeds available platform capacity.

  • Partner with stakeholders to challenge requests when configuration, process change, existing capabilities, reuse, or retirement may produce a better outcome than new development.

  • Maintain transparency into what is being prioritized, why it is being prioritized, and what outcomes are expected.

Value Realization & Product Outcomes

  • Define measurable product outcomes and success measures for roadmap initiatives and platform capabilities, aligned to enterprise capability outcomes.

  • Monitor product and platform indicators such as adoption, user experience, automation, cycle time, reliability, platform health, and realized business value.

  • Evaluate whether delivered capabilities achieve intended outcomes and use results to adjust future roadmap priorities.

  • Communicate platform performance, roadmap progress, risks, dependencies, capacity constraints, and evidence-based investment recommendations to stakeholders and leadership.

Platform Governance & Sustainability

  • Partner with the ServiceNow Platform Architect and engineering team to ensure solutions align with architecture, security, data, integration, and platform governance standards.

  • Balance customization with configuration and out-of-the-box ServiceNow capabilities to protect long-term maintainability and upgradeability.

  • Participate in platform governance and design decision forums and incorporate technical debt, upgrades, lifecycle management, and platform health into product priorities.

  • Operationalize and adhere to established platform principles and guardrails that promote scalability, enterprise reuse, and sustainable product growth; recommend changes when product evidence identifies a need.

Stakeholder & Enterprise Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to business and technology leaders on how ServiceNow capabilities can address enterprise opportunities and operational challenges.

  • Build alignment across competing stakeholder priorities and facilitate difficult product trade-off decisions.

  • Partner closely with capability and process owners, Enterprise Architecture, cybersecurity, risk, engineering, operations, and other enterprise stakeholders.

  • Communicate complex technical and product decisions in clear business terms and create transparency into roadmap decisions, priorities, dependencies, and outcomes.

Agile Product Ownership & Delivery

  • Own and prioritize the product backlog, ensuring work is aligned to the platform roadmap and expected business outcomes.

  • Translate business outcomes into themes, epics, features, user stories, and clear acceptance criteria for technology teams.

  • Lead or participate in planning, refinement, story mapping, reviews, and other agile product management activities.

  • Partner with engineering and architecture throughout solution design and delivery, and accept completed work based on agreed outcomes and acceptance criteria.

  • Ensure operational issues, platform health, technical debt, and lifecycle needs are appropriately reflected in product priorities rather than treated as separate support work.

Product Ownership & Decision Rights

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in product management, product ownership, platform management, technology delivery, or a related discipline.

  • 3+ years working with ServiceNow in a product, platform, architecture, delivery, or process leadership capacity.

  • Demonstrated experience owning or significantly influencing a technology product or platform roadmap and backlog.

  • Experience prioritizing competing enterprise demands and translating business objectives into measurable technology outcomes.

  • Strong understanding of Agile product management and modern product development practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and align stakeholders across business and technology organizations without direct authority.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with senior leaders and technical delivery teams.

  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, facilitation, and decision-making skills in complex or ambiguous situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA).

  • ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) or another relevant ServiceNow certification.

  • Experience with one or more major ServiceNow product areas such as ITSM, ITOM, SPM, CSM, HRSD, SecOps, IRM, or App Engine.

  • Experience operating within a ServiceNow platform governance or Center of Excellence / Center of Excellence and Innovation model.

  • Working knowledge of ServiceNow platform architecture, integration patterns, data models, and upgrade or lifecycle considerations.

  • ITIL 4 Foundation or advanced ITIL certification.

  • Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO), or comparable product-management certification.

  • Experience working with diverse technology teams in a complex, highly regulated enterprise environment.

  • Comfort presenting to large audiences and facilitating discussions with stakeholders at multiple organizational levels.
