Setting: Inpatient Hospital / Outpatient Pulmonary Function Laboratory (Level 1 Trauma Center)
Date Range: September 15, 2026 – December 12, 2026 (13 Weeks)
Schedule: Mix of 8-hour (7:00 AM – 4:00 PM / 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM) and 10-hour (7:00 AM – 5:30 PM) day shifts
On-Call / Weekend / Holiday Requirements: None (No weekend or holiday requirements)
Position Overview
A premier academic health system and Level 1 Trauma Center in Southern New Jersey is seeking an experienced Respiratory Therapist (RRT / CRT) for a 13-week contract in their Pulmonary Function Laboratory. The Therapist will perform specialized diagnostic pulmonary testing, evaluate respiratory function, and collaborate with pulmonologists to assist in diagnosing and monitoring acute and chronic pulmonary disorders.
Key Responsibilities & Clinical Scope
- Diagnostic Testing: Perform comprehensive pulmonary function testing (PFTs), including spirometry, lung volumes (plethysmography/gas dilution), and diffusion capacity (DLCO).
- Specialized Protocols: Conduct bronchial challenge testing (methacholine challenge) and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) to evaluate exercise-induced bronchospasm and pulmonary impairment.
- Patient Assessment & Care: Administer aerosolized bronchodilators during testing and monitor patient responses, vital signs, and arterial blood gas (ABG) levels as needed.
- Equipment Quality Control: Perform daily calibration, maintenance, quality control, and infection control protocols on all PFT equipment and metabolic carts.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate patient testing records and report data promptly within the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
- Degree: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited program [Required]
- Level 1 Trauma Experience: Recent clinical experience in a Level 1 Trauma facility [Required]
- PFT Lab Experience: Prior experience in a high-volume Pulmonary Function Laboratory [Required]
- Specialized Testing: Experience with methacholine challenge testing and cardiopulmonary exercise testing [Highly Preferred]
Licensure & Certifications
- State Licensure: Active, unrestricted State Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) License [Required]
- National Certification: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential [Required] (CPFT/RPFT credential preferred)
- Life Support: Active AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification [Required]
